A self-humidifying proton exchange membrane (PEM) composition, a membrane-electrode assembly, and a fuel cell. The PEM composition comprises (a) a proton-conducting polymer; (b) a catalyst that promotes the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen molecules to generate water in the membrane, and (c) a deliquescent material dispersed in this polymer. The amount of catalyst is preferably 0.01%-50% by weight on the basis of the polymer weight. The catalyst is preferably a metal catalyst selected from the group consisting of platinum, gold, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, and mixtures and alloys thereof. Suitable deliquescent materials include, but are not limited to, calcium chloride, calcium bromide, potassium biphosphate, potassium acetate and combinations thereof. A deliquescent material absorbs and retains an essentially constant amount of moisture to keep the proton mobile in the PEM structure. The fuel cell containing such a PEM composition can be used in a higher temperature and / or lower-humidity environment.

Method and system for removal of mercury from a flue gas

Processes and methods exist for decreasing emissions of mercury upon combustion of fossil fuels such as coal. Halide salts can be effective when used at locations where they are thermally decomposed to form reactive halogen species, or in combination with an adsorbent material such as activated carbon. Halide salts, such as calcium bromide and sodium bromide, are not typically used at locations downstream of the economizer, where the temperature is typically below around 500° C., because these salts are non-thermolabile and do not decompose to produce reactive halogen species. However, in flue gas streams that certain flue gas constituents, such as sulfur trioxide or sulfuric acid, reactive halogen species can be produced via chemical reaction. These species react with elemental mercury through various means to form an oxidized form of mercury that is more easily captured in downstream pollution control devices such as particulate control devices or SO2 scrubbers.

Heavy Fluid and Method of Making It

Heavy fluids are made from calcium bromide and at least one hydrogen bond donor such as a low molecular weight polyol or an organic acid. The combination of a hydrogen bond donor and calcium bromide as a hydrogen bond acceptor in an appropriate molar ratio forms a higher density clear completion fluid at a low temperature not otherwise obtainable with heavy aqueous solutions of calcium bromide such as are used in oilfield wells. A method of making the fluid comprises mixing calcium bromide with the polyol(s) in the presence of water and then reducing the water content, thus forming a heavy fluid. A crystallization inhibitor such as nitrilitriacetamide or a particulate silicate is included in the formulation. When the heavy fluid “freezes,” its physical form is somewhat amorphous and pumpable rather than crystalline. The heavy fluid is useful as a drilling fluid as well as a completion fluid and for other purposes in oil recovery processes where extreme density is beneficial.
