A method and apparatus for combustion analysing a sample in a combustion analyzer (120,160,180), where the sample comprises a proportion of sulphur. The sample is supplied to the combustion analyzer and combusted to produce combustion products, comprising a yield of sulphur dioxide for detection. Nitrogen monoxide or a source of nitrogen monoxide is supplied to the combustion analyzer to improve the yield of sulphur dioxide in the combustion products. The yield improver may be supplied before and / or during the combusting step. A proportion of yield improver is preferably greater than the (expected) proportion of sulphur. Ozone may be supplied to the combustion products to convert at least a proportion of any nitrogen monoxide in the combustion products to nitrogen dioxide, before detection.

Described is a new high-throughput method to measure a carbon containing compounds solubility. It centers on measuring the carbon dioxide gas released during the combustion of a saturated solution. The amount of carbon present (which is related to the carbon dioxide gas released) will be directly related to the amount of drug dissolved in the solution. This method can be automated to allow for a high throughput. An advantage of this present invention is that if the chemical formula of the compound is known, then no reference sample is required as in the case of other similar methods.

The development method comprises steps: the combustion-related parameters of the cylinder of the diesel engine are acquired; the conventional parameters of the diesel engine and the exhaust gas of the diesel engine are measured; when exhaust emission does not reach non-road stage-III emission regulations, all acquired parameters are compared with an original engine, the explosion-proof diesel engine is improved according to a comparison result until the exhaust emission reaches thenon-road stage-III emission regulations, and then, the development is ended.
