Fiber optic infrared laser beam delivery system

A laser beam delivery system is disclosed, which allows transmission of high-power infrared light through a hollow core photonic band gap (HC-PBG) fiber made of non-silica-based glass. In this system, the infrared beam first passes through input coupling optics which focus the beam onto the hollow core of the HC-PBG fiber. In front of the input end of the HC-PBG fiber, there is provided a mask with a hole aligned with the hollow core, and the infrared beam first passes through this hole before entering the hollow core of the HC-PBG fiber. This protects the photonic band gap structure from being damaged by the beam. After passing through the HC-PBG fiber, which may be from one to several hundred meters in length, the infrared beam exits at the output end of the fiber and passes through output coupling optics which collimate and focus the beam onto a desired target. The various components of the system may be water cooled during the operation or subjected to a gas purge to prevent condensation or gas ionization.

Method of measuring thickness of an opaque coating using infrared absorbance

Amount of opaque coating on a substrate is determined. An infrared beam is transmitted into the opaque coating on the substrate. Infrared beams scattered by the opaque coating are collected and detected at a first wavelength and a second wavelength. Infrared energy Ic1 and Ic2 of the collected infrared beams at the first and second wavelengths, respectively, are compared with predetermined values of infrared energy Io1 and Io2 of collected infrared beams at the first and second wavelengths, respectively, that are scattered by a reference substrate without the opaque coating to determine absorbance values A1 and A2 for the opaque coating at the first and second wavelengths, respectively. Absorbance values A1 and A2 at the first and second wavelengths are given by equations A1=−log10(Ic1 / Io1) and A2=−log10(Ic2 / Io2). A difference A1−A2 is correlated to an opaque coating amount.

Training simulator for sharp shooting

The simulator of the invention is based on a number of functional units connected directly or remotely to the central computer for controlling the operation and recording the shooting results. The weapon unit is untethered and includes a real hand gun equipped with a snap-on emitter unit to send simultaneously two beams of light upon pulling the trigger—a wide angle infrared beam and a narrowly focused and aimed at the target light beam. The infrared beam is registered by the sensor near the screen and a signal indicating a firing event is sent to the computer. The light beam, preferably from a laser source is sent towards the screen, reflected therefrom towards the optical block and travels through a number of fixed and rotating mirrors and through a light divider to the light sensor. That sensor when activated sends the HIT or MISS signal to the computer. Importantly, the optical travel path of the reflected from the screen light beam coincides with the travel path of the light beam generating the target of the screen. Controlled by the computer, rotation of the rotating mirrors both places the target at a specific area of the screen as well as allows accepting of the light beam from the screen by the light sensor. The target generator allows to position the target on the screen in any desirable area or to move it with constant or variable speed along a predetermined complex path on the screen. A video projector allows adding of the pre-recorded of virtual computer-generated surrounding scene onto the screen to increase the degree of realism of the shooting exercise.

Method of measuring amount of chemical cure and amount of surface contamination using infrared absorbance

Amount of coating cure or contamination is determined. An infrared beam is transmitted into a crystal. The beam reflects off an internal face at an angle higher than critical reflection angle to generate total reflection at the crystal face. The beam exits the crystal, is filtered at two wavelengths, and is detected to give values Io1 and Io2 of infrared energy reflected without coating. A coated sample contacts an outside face of the crystal. An evanescent wave penetrates the sample where the beam reflects from internal crystal face. The beam is partially absorbed by sample, exits the crystal, is filtered at two wavelengths, and is detected to give values Ic1 and Ic2 of infrared energy reflected with coating. Absorbance values A1 and A2 at two wavelengths are A1=−log10(Ic1 / Io1) and A2=−log10(Ic2 / Io2). Amount of cure or contamination is proportional to ratio or difference between A1 and A2.
