The present invention relates to methods and compositions for inhibiting pancreatic beta cell dysfunction and Fas-mediated apoptosis. The invention relates to recombinant vectors, including viral vectors, comprising nucleic acids molecules encoding inhibitors of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and Fas-mediated apoptosis and the use of such vectors for transfer of said nucleic acid molecules into beta cells. The invention encompasses genetically engineered beta cells comprising nucleic acid molecules encoding inhibitors of IL-1beta signal transduction. The invention further relates to methods for transplanting such genetically engineered beta cells into a host recipient with a pancreatic disorder. The methods and compositions of the invention may be used to reduce Il-1beta mediated beta cell dysfunction and apoptosis, thereby reducing the insulitis associated with pancreatic disorders such as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).

Macadamia Propagation Methods

The invention provides a propagation method of macadamia integrifolia. The propagation method comprises the following steps: (1), culturing rootstock seedlings: using tree planting bags for culturing seedlings, timely weeding, fertilizing, performing deinsectization, disease prevention and strengthening management and protection after the rootstock seedlings are cultured to be 60 cm or above, and selecting rootstock seedlings with the rootstock stem diameter of 0.95-1.35 cm as grafting seedlings; (2), selecting scions: the scions are semi-lignified spring twigs, retaining one intact leaf and shearing to remove the rest of leaves; (3), performing grafting: grafting is performed in late February during the spring, clipping lower half parts of the selected scions in the step 2 to achieve smooth wedge-shaped notches of 2-3 cm in length, longitudinally cutting centers of the notches of the rootstock to obtain grafting openings of 2.5-3 cm in length, inserting the scions with the wedge-shaped notches into the grafting openings for grafting; when the plants grow stably and new roots grow out of the plants, the plants can be transplanted out of a nursery; (4), performing field management: the plants that are transplanted out of the nursery are watered timely , weeds are killed, the fertilizer is applied and pest control is carried out. According to the propagation method of macadamia integrifolia, provided by the invention, rootstock seedlings, scions and the grafting method are optimally selected, so that the grafting survival percentage of macadamia integrifolia can reach 95% or above.
