System and method for enhancing the availability of routing systems through equal cost multipath

In a networking environment including one or more network processing (NP) devices and implementing a routing protocol for routing data packets from a source NP devices to destination NP devices via a switch fabric, with each network processing device supporting a number of interface ports, a system and method for enabling a routing system to recover more quickly that the routing protocol so as to significantly reduce the occurrence of lost data packets to a failed target interface / blade. The routing system is enabled to track the operational status of each network processor device and operational status of destination ports supported by each network processor device in the system, and maintains the operational status as a data structure at each network processing device. Prior to routing packets, an expedient logical determination is made as to the operational status of a target network processing device and target interface port of a current packet to be routed as represented in the data structure maintained at the source NP device. If the target blade / interface is not operations, an alternative route may be provided by ECMP. In this manner, correct routing of packets is ensured with reduced occurrence of lost data packets due to failed target NP devices / ports.

Method and apparatus for reducing power consumption in GNSS receivers

Systems and methods are disclosed herein to use what is referred to as adaptive continuous tracking (ACT) to reduce the power consumption of GNSS receivers. In GNSS receivers, performance as measured by position accuracy is a function of the observation time of the satellites. A longer observation time translates into more reliable range measurements and demodulated data, and ultimately into better positioning accuracy of the receivers. However, a longer observation time also means more power consumption. ACT allows satellite observation time to be tuned to the desired positioning performance by dynamically adjusting the on time period of the receivers while maintaining a minimum performance metric. The performance metric may be formed from a combination of the estimated position error, the horizontal dilution of precision (HDOP), the data collection state, and the receiver operating environment as characterized by the carrier to noise ratio (CN0). ACT cyclically switches on / off the radio frequency (RF) front-end and also cyclically enables / disables the baseband hardware of the receivers to reduce power consumption while allowing the receivers to meet the minimum performance metric and ensuring continuous satellite tracking, continuous positioning fix operation, multiplexed GNSS operation, and continuous data collection.

Allocation of memory access operations to memory access capable pipelines in a superscalar data processing apparatus and method having a plurality of execution threads

A superscalar data processing apparatus and method are provided for processing operations, the apparatus having a plurality of execution threads and each execution thread being operable to process a sequence of operations including at least one memory access operation. The superscalar data processing apparatus comprises a plurality of execution pipelines for executing the operations, and issue logic for allocating each operation to one of the execution pipelines for execution by that execution pipeline. At least two of the execution pipelines are memory access capable pipelines which can execute memory access operations, and each memory access capable pipeline is associated with a subset of the plurality of execution threads. The issue logic is arranged, for each execution thread, to allocate any memory access operations of that execution thread to an associated memory access capable pipeline. Such a system has been found to provide an effective balance between increasing the efficiency of operation of the superscalar data processing apparatus when employing multiple execution threads whilst also alleviating the need for complex hardware to handle hazard detection.
