Dual-lensed unitary optical receiver assembly

A unitary optical receiver assembly is formed to include a V-groove passively aligned with a first aspheric lens (the lens formed along a surface perpendicular to the V-groove). An optical fiber is disposed along the V-groove and is used to bring the received optical signal into the unitary assembly. Upon passing through the first aspheric lens, the received optical signal will intercept a 45° turning mirror wall that directs the signal downward, through a second aspheric lens (also molded in the unitary assembly), and then into a photosensitive device. Advantageously, the photosensitive device is disposed in passive alignment with the second aspheric lens, allowing for a received signal to be coupled from an incoming optical fiber to a photosensitive device without needing any type of active alignment therebetween.

Intraoperative dynamic trialing

A dynamic trialing method generally allows a surgeon to perform a preliminary bone resection on the distal femur according to a curved or planar resection profile. With the curved resection profile, the distal-posterior femoral condyles may act as a femoral trial component after the preliminary bone resection. This may eliminate the need for a separate femoral trial component, reducing the cost and complexity of surgery. With the planar resection profile, shims or skid-like inserts that correlate to the distal-posterior condyles of the final insert may be attached to the distal femur after the preliminary bone resection to facilitate intraoperative trialing. The method and related components may also provide the ability of a surgeon to perform iterative intraoperative kinematic analysis and gap balancing, providing the surgeon the ability to perform necessary ligament and / or other soft tissue releases and fine tune the final implant positions based on data acquired during the surgery.

Metal-enhanced fluorescence for the label-free detection of interacting biomolecules

A method for enhancing fluorescence of a biomolecule includes the step of associating the biomolecule having intrinsic fluorescence with a sensing surface that contains nanostructured metal. Association of the biomolecule with the nanostructured metal enhances its intrinsic fluorescence, which is detected upon exposure to electromagnetic radiation of a suitable wavelength. The sensing surface may include capture or ligand molecule which binds to the biomolecule and sequesters it in proximity to the nanostructured metal, thereby causing its fluorescent signal to be enhanced. The method can be used in label-free bioassays for detection of interacting biomolecules, such as antibody-antigen binding.

Door latch with emergency lock actuator and 'impatient passenger' feature

In one aspect, the invention is directed to a closure latch for a vehicle door. The closure latch includes an emergency lock actuator to permit a person to lock the door in the event that the power lock actuator is unusable. The latch also includes an ‘impatient passenger’ feature, which permits the doors to be unlocked using the remote keyless-entry feature on the key fob even in a situation where an ‘impatient passenger’ had prematurely lifted the door handle of the vehicle. In some prior art latches, such an action by an ‘impatient passenger’ would prevent the drive motor on the latch from unlocking the latch, thereby necessitating the owner to press the unlock button on the key fob a second time. There is some overlap in the components that used for the ‘impatient passenger’ feature and the components used for the emergency lock actuator, thereby reducing cost and complexity of the latch.

Detector with tunable spectral response

A semiconductor detector has a tunable spectral response. These detectors may be used with processing techniques that permit the creation of “synthetic” sensors that have spectral responses that are beyond the spectral responses attainable by the underlying detectors. For example, the processing techniques may permit continuous and independent tuning of both the center wavelength and the spectral resolution of the synthesized spectral response. Other processing techniques can also generate responses that are matched to specific target signatures.

Fiber-optic beam delivery system for wafer edge processing

A method and apparatus for processing substrate edges is disclosed that overcomes the limitations of conventional edge processing methods and systems used in semiconductor manufacturing. The edge processing method and apparatus of this invention includes a laser and fiber-optic system to direct laser radiation onto a rotating substrate supported by a chuck. A laser beam is transmitted into a bundle of optical fibers, and the fibers accurately and precisely direct the beam to remove or transform organic or inorganic films, film stacks, residues, or particles, in atmosphere, from the top edge, top bevel, apex, bottom bevel, and bottom edge of the substrate in a single process step. Reaction by-products are removed by means of an exhaust tube enveloping the reaction site. This invention permits precise control of an edge exclusion width, resulting in an increase in the number of usable die on a wafer. Wafer edge processing with this invention replaces existing methods that use large volumes of purified water and hazardous chemicals including solvents, acids, alkalis, and proprietary strippers.

On-the-fly redundancy operation for forming redundant drive data and reconstructing missing data as data transferred between buffer memory and disk drives during write and read operation respectively

InactiveUSRE39421E1Improve disk array performanceImproved disk array performanceInput/output to record carriersStatic storageMultiplexingData stream
A disk drive array controller and method carries out disk drive data transfers not only concurrently but also synchronously with respect to all of the drives in the array. For synchronous operation, only a single-channel DMA is required to manage the buffer memory. A single, common strobe is coupled to all of the drives for synchronous read and write operations, thereby reducing controller complexity and pin count. A ring-structure drive data bus together with double buffering techniques allows use of a single, common shift clock instead of a series of staggered strobes as required in prior art for multiplexing / demultiplexing buffer memory data, again providing for reduced controller complexity and pin count in a preferred integrated circuit embodiment of the new disk array controller. Methods and circuitry also are disclosed for generating and storing redundant data (e.g. “check” or parity data) “on the fly” during a write operation to a RAID array. Techniques also are disclosed for reconstructing and inserting missing data into a read data streamon the fly” so that a disk drive failure is transparent to the host.

Method of Forming Vertical Contacts in Integrated Circuits

A method of forming vertical contacts in an integrated circuit that couple one or more metal lines in a given metallization level to first and second features occupying different levels in the integrated circuit comprises various processing steps. A first etch stop layer is formed overlying at least of portion of the first feature while a second etch stop layer is formed overlying at least a portion of the second feature. An ILD layer is formed overlying the first and second etch stop layers. A photolithographic mask is formed overlying the ILD layer. The photolithographic mask defines a first opening over the first feature and a second opening over the second feature. A first etch process etches a first hole in the ILD layer through the first opening in the photolithographic mask that lands on the first etch stop layer and etches a second hole in the ILD layer through the second opening that lands on the second etch stop layer. Subsequently, a second etch process further etches the first hole so that it lands on the first feature.
