Methods for nanowire growth

The present invention is directed to methods to produce, process, and exploit nanomaterials, and particularly elongated nanowire materials. The invention provides a method for producing nanowires that includes providing a thin film of a catalyst material with varying thickness on a substrate, heating the substrate and thin film, such that the thin film disassociates at the relatively thinner regions and vapor depositing a semiconductor onto the substrate to produce nanowires. A method is also provided in which two or more thin films of different materials are overlayed over a substrate, selectively etching the first underlying thin film to create a plurality of islands of the second thin film that mask portions of the first thin film and expose other portions and growing nanowires on the first thin film. Additional methods for producing nanowires are provided.

Digital transmitter with constrained envelope and spectral regrowth over a plurality of carriers

A constrained-envelope digital communications transmitter (10) places constraints on the envelope of spectrally constrained, digitally modulated communication signals (46) converted into diverse frequency channels (54) and combined into a composite signal (58). The envelope constraints achieve lower peak-to-average power ratio without allowing significant spectral regrowth. The composite signal (58) is applied to a plurality of cascade-coupled constrained-envelope generators (64). Each constrained-envelope generator (64) detects overpeak events (66) and configures corrective impulses (68) for the overpeak events (66). The corrective impulses (68) are distributed to the respective frequency channels (54) in accordance with a predetermined distribution profile (102) and are filtered into allocated shaped pulses (120) that exhibit a constrained spectrum. The allocated shaped pulses (120) are coherently converted into the respective frequency channels (54) and combined with the composite signal (58) to reduce an unwanted signal peak.

Constrained-envelope digital communications transmitter and method therefor

A constrained-envelope digital communications transmitter (10) places constraints on the envelope of a spectrally constrained, digitally modulated communication signal (42) to lower peak-to-average power ratio without allowing significant spectral regrowth. A communication signal (14,42) is applied to a plurality of cascade-coupled constrained-envelope generators (50). Each constrained-envelope generator (50) detects overpeak events (52) and configures corrective impulses (54) for the overpeak events (52). The corrective impulses (54) are filtered into shaped pulses (88) that exhibit a constrained spectrum and combine with the communication signal (14, 42) to reduce an unwanted signal peak. Trailing portions (92) of the shaped pulses (88) are fed-back and combined with the communication signal (14,42) so that future overpeak events (52) are identified after compensation is made for the influence of the trailing portions (92) of any recently past shaped pulses (88) on the communication signal (14,42).

Method for producing piezoelectric actuator and method for producing ink-jet head

In the annealing step of the method for manufacturing a piezoelectric actuator, the annealing in conducted in two steps: a first annealing step; and a second annealing step conducted at a temperature lower and for a time longer than those of the first annealing step. With such treatment, first, grain growth inside the piezoelectric film can be sufficiently induced, while minimizing the diffusion layer growth, by the first annealing step conducted at a high temperature within a short interval, and then lattice defects in the particles can be sufficiently corrected, while preventing the diffusion layer growth, by the second annealing step conducted at a temperature lower and for a time longer than those of the first annealing step. Accordingly, the piezoelectric characteristic can be improved by sufficiently conducting annealing, while restricting the thickness of the diffusion layer to a range where the piezoelectric characteristic is not affected.

Rhenium composite alloys and a method of preparing same

A rhenium alloy is provided having from about 50 atomic % to 99 atomic % rhenium and a refractory compound particulates that are present in the alloy in an amount up to about 10 atomic %. The refractory compound comprises a nano-scale dispersion that is incorporated into the conventional rhenium structure. The nano-scale dispersion acts as grain boundary pins that result in a relatively fine grained, equiaxed structure that improves the mechanical properties of the alloy and helps to minimize the growth of large grains during operations at high temperatures. As a result, the amount of the rhenium used in high temperature applications may be reduced without sacrificing its high temperature and mechanical properties. Cryomilling in the presence of nitrogen may be used to prepare the rhenium alloy having a stable fine grain structure at high temperatures.
