Hybrid Capacitive Touch Screen Element

A capacitive touch sensitive position sensor is provided which has a substrate defining a touch sensitive platform. First and second resistive bus-bars arranged spaced apart on the substrate. A conductive sensing area is formed between the bus bars and is constructed with first and second conductive elements connected to the first and second resistive bus-bars respectively, and spaced apart from each other by non-conducting gaps, so that currents induced in the conductive sensing area flow towards the bus-bars, but are prevented from flowing in a direction parallel to the bus-bars. This design removes pin-cushion distortion and enhances linearization of the output signals. Because the sensing region is not galvanically coupled from one bus bar to the other, the voltage gradients remain uniform and undistorted. Capacitive coupling from one side to the other does not produce a distortion component provided that the capacitance is allowed to fully charge and discharge across all locations in the sensing region.

Method and apparatus for detecting two simultaneous touches and gestures on a resistive touchscreen

Resistive touchscreen system has substrate and coversheet with first and second conductive coatings. The substrate and coversheet are positioned proximate each other such that the first conductive coating faces the second conductive coating. The substrate and coversheet are electrically disconnected with respect to each other in the absence of a touch. First set of electrodes is formed on the substrate for establishing voltage gradients in first direction. Second set of electrodes is formed on the coversheet for establishing voltage gradients in second direction wherein the first and second directions are different. Controller biases the first and second sets of electrodes in first and second cycles and senses a bias load resistance associated with at least one of the sets of electrodes. The bias load resistance has a reference value associated with no touch. A decrease in the bias load resistance relative to the reference value indicates two simultaneous touches.

Subcutaneous cardiac stimulator with small contact surface electrodes

A subcutaneous cardiac device includes two electrodes and a stimulator that generates a pulse to the electrodes. The electrodes are implanted between the skin and the rib cage of the patient and are adapted to generate an electric field corresponding to the pulse, the electric field having a substantially uniform voltage gradient as it passes through the heart. The shapes, sizes, positions and structures of the electrodes are selected to optimize the voltage gradient of the electric field, and to minimize the energy dissipated by the electric field outside the heart. More specifically, the electrodes have contact surfaces that contact the patient tissues, said contact surfaces having a total contact area of less than 100 cm2. In one embodiment, one or both electrodes are physically separated from the stimulator. In another embodiment a unitary housing holds the both electrodes and the stimulator. Sensor circuitry may also includes in the stimulator for detecting intrinsic cardiac activity through the same electrodes.

Methods and apparatus for reducing artifacts in mass spectrometers

The invention solves the problem of artifact ghost peaks which can sometimes arise in mass spectrometers that employ a quadrupole rod set for both trapping and mass analyzing the trapped ions. The problem arises as a result of randomly distributed voltage gradients along the length of the rods. Three solutions are presented. The first approach involves improving the conduction characteristics of the rod sets. The second approach involves the application of at least one continuous axial DC field to the trapping quadrupole rod set in order to urge ions towards a pre-determined region of the trap, thereby avoiding voltage gradients. The third approach involves the application of one or more discrete axial fields to create one or more potential barriers along the axial dimension of the trap (in addition to the barriers used to initially trap the ions). These barriers prevent ions of differing voltage gradients from equilibrating with one another.

An electric fish barrier for deterring fish from entering a water intake in a reservoir or along a waterway has a set of conductive members at a first voltage potential and a second set of conductive members at a second voltage potential. The conductive members are disposed on support piles extending up from the bottom of the reservoir. Each conductive member extends vertically between a pre-determined range of depths from an upper depth to a lower depth, forming a contiguous voltage gradient between the two sets of conductive members. Fish are drawn to the attraction flow of water flowing into the intake. The two sets of conductive members are oriented such that the attraction flow passes through the contiguous voltage gradient, thereby deterring the fish from following the attraction flow into the water intake.

Distributed Potential Charged Particle Detector

A charged particle beam system for imaging and processing targets is disclosed, comprising a charged particle column, a secondary particle detector, and a secondary particle detection grid assembly between the target and detector. In one embodiment, the grid assembly comprises a multiplicity of grids, each with a separate bias voltage, wherein the electric field between the target and the grids may be adjusted using the grid voltages to optimize the spatial distribution of secondary particles reaching the detector.
