The device enables a second drop to be mixed in a first drop deposited on an electrically insulating layer of an analysis support, in a viscous liquid environment and to mix the resulting drop. The device comprises at least one injector forming the second drop above the first drop. After formation of the second drop, a voltage impulse is applied between a first electrode, arranged under the electrically insulating layer of the analysis support, underneath the first drop, and a second electrode arranged near the outlet orifice of the injector. The voltage impulse fosters the coalescence phenomenon between the two drops, while preventing risks of contamination of the injector by the reagent of the first drop.

A method of making a facile, surface-independent, polyphenol coating is disclosed. In general, the method includes contacting at least a portion of the substrate to be coated with an aqueous solution containing one or more salts and one or more nitrogen-free phenolic compounds. Substrates of all kinds may be used, and compounds used to make the coating may include epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), tannic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol, and / or other nitrogen-free phenolic compounds. The coating made using the method, methods of using the coating, and kits comprising the coating precursors are also disclosed.

Apparatus using an electro-catalytic coating to reduce ship's friction and prevent biofouling

An apparatus for friction reduction and biofouling prevention is invented, which consists of an anodic electro-catalytic layer and a cathodic electro-catalytic layer installed on the submerged surface of a carrier. There is an insulating filling between the anodic layer and the cathodic layer. The layered coatings are applied with the use of electric arc spraying technique. A first DC power supply unit is connected to the anodic layer and the cathodic layer. The anodic layer, the cathodic layer, the DC power supply unit, and water together form the conducting path for water electro-catalysis. Hydrogen and oxygen gases are produced to form a thin gas film on the submerged surface to reduce friction and prevent biofouling on the carrier. Alternatively, the apparatus produces hydroxyl radicals to kill marine microorganisms and reduce the risk of biofouling and biocorrosion.

The invention provides a voltaic cell for implantation into the body of a subject that oxidizes oxidizable biological material to generate current to do work. The voltaic cell comprises a biologically inert shell having an inner compartment containing a cathodic environment and an anodic environment on the outer surface of the shell that is in contact with bodily fluid. A connector connects the anodic environment to the cathodic environment and has a component that provides resistance between the anodic and cathodic environments. The shell contains at least one salt bridge disposed within the shell that permits passage of small ions between the inner compartment and the bodily fluid, thereby completing the circuit. The invention also provides devices such as a glucometer which continuously detects glucose and transmits a signal to an external device which provides an output, such as blood glucose level. According to the technical scheme of the invention, the problem that the IGZO semiconductor and the organic insulating layer are not matched in lattice so as to cause the damage of the subsequent DC magnetron sputtering to the organic insulating layer and the formation of a large leakage current can be solved.

A hollow-cylindrical spiral-wound type reverse osmosis membrane is disposed inside a cylindrical pressure vessel. An electrostatic-field generator is disposed inside the pressure vessel. A high voltage direct current source powers the electrostatic-field generator and a voltage gradient is constantly produced inside the volume of the pressure vessel. Such gradients cut through the fabric of the reverse osmosis membrane layers. The voltage to the electrostatic-field generator is kept on at all times, and prevents biofouling, even during lay-up periods. Current flow through the electrostatic-field generator is insignificant because it acts as a high-Z capacitor.
