The invention discloses a hydrophobic additive based on silane modified zinc oxide as well as a preparation method and application of the hydrophobic additive. According to the additive, zinc oxide whiskers with a three-dimensional tetrapod-like structure are used as a matrix, and tetraethyl orthosilicate and hexadecyl trimethoxy silane are subjected to hydrolytic polymerization on the surface of the matrix to form a super-hydrophobic structure. The hydrophobic additive is simply mixed with traditional explosion suppression powder (such as sodium bicarbonate) which is easy to absorb moisture in proportion, so that the hydrophobicity and the anti-blocking capability of the composite powder can be remarkably improved. The process is simple, safe and environmentally friendly, the key problem that the performance of the explosion suppressant is degraded in a high-humidity environment is effectively solved, and a novel efficient material is provided for industrial dust explosion protection.
