Method for detecting a check-back signal in an optical transmission system

The invention relates to a method for detecting a check-back signal in a transmission system for optical signals. According to said method, a constant proportion of the output in a defined frequency range of the check-back signal is concentrated in a narrow-band spectral range and is determined after a transmission phase by means of a narrow-band detection of the concentrated energy around the spectral range. If no signal is identified during the narrow-band detection, a line interruption is determined and no pump source is switched on for safety reasons. The narrow-band detection of the check-back signal also allows the transmission attenuation of the transmission system to be measured.

Method and system to improve handover between mobile video networks and cells

ActiveUS20050233705A1Improved receiver operationSimplified network signal searchEnergy efficient ICTBroadcast with distributionDigital videoIntegrated receiver/decoder
A digital video broadcast network comprises a content provider and several transmitters. Each transmitter may transmit more than one signal, different signals having different frequencies, multiplexes and the like and relating to different network types. An integrated receiver / decoder (IRD) is mobile in the area around the transmitters. As well as transmitting service information as part of a network information table on a data layer, the transmitters provide in their output signals transmitter parameter information as TPS data on a physical layer. This TPS information includes information identifying whether there are other networks available, and preferably the number of other networks. Transmission parameters relating to the other networks are included in an other_network_descriptor, forming part of an NIT actual or a BAT, or alternatively in an NIT_other. This information is used by the IRD in signal scan. Using the described broadcast signals, signal scan can be made more efficient, resulting in reduced power consumption and scanning time. IRDs may also receive free field three dimensional models of signal levels created for a group of cells. The models may be in the form of bitmaps and used during handover procedures.

Phase Shift Keyed Modulation of Optical Signal Using Chirp Managed Laser

A high-speed optical transmitter comprises multiple digital lanes that are provided to a bank of digital-to-analog converters. The analog signals are then used to Phase Shift Keyed (PSK) modulation using a Chirp Managed Laser (CML)-based transmitter, and potentially using dual polarization. A corresponding optical receiver receives the sequence of optical signals at a demodulator. For each polarization, the demodulator includes a corresponding demodulation channel that is configured to demodulate that polarization component of the optical signal into one or more signal components. Each of these signal components is converted into a corresponding digital signal using a corresponding analog-to-digital converter. In the case of higher-order PSK modulation (e.g., 8PSK or higher), for each polarization, the analog converter has a lower sampling rate than for QPSK modulation.

Automatic bias control for an optical modulator

An automatic bias controller for an optical modulator is provided. The automatic bias controller comprises a driver for providing an electrical data signal to the modulator and bias means for providing a bias voltage to the modulator. A microprocessor provides a low frequency digital modulation signal, which is converted to an analogue modulation signal by a digital to analogue converter. The analogue modulation signal is applied to the bias means (so as to modulate the bias voltage) or to the driver (so as to modulate the amplitude of the data signal). Intensity detection means for detecting the intensity of light emitted by the modulator are provided, and an analogue to digital converter converts the output of the intensity detection means to a digital intensity signal which is passed to the microprocessor. The digital intensity signal is analysed, and the bias means instructed to adjust the bias voltage on the basis of the analysed signal. The digital modulation signal is preferably a rectangular wave or time multiplexed series of periods in which the bias voltage and data signal amplitude are varied.

System and method for human assisted secure information exchange

InactiveUS20080195866A1Easy to understand and useMinimal user interface requirementUser identity/authority verificationNetwork topologiesSecurity informationSystem requirements
A system that assures a user that two specific devices have exchanged information correctly over an insecure communication channel. In a typical application, the channel would be a wireless network connection and the information would consist of the public keys of the two devices. The exchanged public keys would subsequently be used to secure any further communication between the two devices. The system requires that both devices have an output modality interpretable by a human. One of the devices must have an input modality that can be operated by the user. The input and output modalities can be very simple e.g., they can consist of a button and LEDs. The users would press the button multiple times. On each press, the LEDs on both devices display a color and the user compares the colors and that they are synchronous. A noticeable delay or color difference signifies a security threat.

High-speed, rugged, time-resolved, raman spectrometer for sensing multiple components of a sample

A new architecture for implementing a time-resolved Raman spectrometer is 2-3 orders of magnitude faster than current systems. The system additionally is compact, environmentally rugged, low cost and can detect multiple components of a sample simultaneously. In one embodiment, the invention employs a rotating optical switch to time multiplex an input signal through multiple bandpass filters and into a single optical detector which is electrically activated only when the filtered input light pulse is about to impact it.The combination of time-multiplexing the input signal through multiple optical filters and time-sequencing the optical detector enables the device to detect and analyze 2-3 orders of magnitude faster than current designs, processing spectra within milliseconds instead of seconds. The system can process multiple material samples (25+) simultaneously, instead of sequentially, and its mechanical ruggedness and simplicity enables using the system in harsh physical environments when traditional spectrometers can not be used reliably.

OFDM peak-to-average power ratio reduction method

The OFDM peak-to-average power ratio reduction apparatus and method provides a compressive sensing algorithm that estimates the sparsity pattern of a sparse vector by a limited number of measurements. When the positions of the clipped peaks are known beforehand by, e.g., a genie-augmented receiver, then the algorithm optimally performs amplitude estimation utilizing a least squares estimation technique. When the cardinality of the peak-reducing signal is known at the receiver at initialization, the receiver optimizes the estimated peak-reducing signal by using least squares.
