327 results about "Biological species" patented technology

The biological species concept gives an explanation of how species form (speciation). A biological species is a group of individuals that can breed together (panmixia). However, they cannot breed with other groups. In other words, the group is reproductively isolated from other groups.

Systems and methods for biosensing and microresonator sensors for same

A biosensor system is provided for detecting biological species such as bacteria, proteins, viruses, spores and DNA or RNA. The biosensor system may also be able to distinguish between Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. In some embodiments, the analyte solution flows past a detector surface to a filter, which traps the analyte. The analyte is then washed back past the detector surface, thus increasing the number of analyte species that become attached to the surface. The detector may include an optical microresonator that is optically coupled via waveguides to a light source and an optical detector. One of the waveguides may be provided with a wavelength selective reflector to increase the amount of probe light coupled into the microresonator or to increase the fraction of the signal light detected by the optical detector.

Dynamically controllable biological/chemical detectors having nanostructured surfaces

A biological / chemical detector is disclosed that is capable of manipulating liquids, such as reagent droplets, without relying on microchannels. In a first embodiment, fluid flow is passed through the detector, thus causing particles wholly or partially containing an illustrative chemical compound or biological species to be collected on the tips of nanostructures in the detector. A droplet of liquid is moved across the tips of the nanostructures, thus absorbing the particles into the liquid. The droplet is caused to penetrate the nanostructures in a desired location, thus causing the chemical compound or biological species in said liquid droplet to come into contact with, for example, a reagent. In another embodiment, a fluid flow is passed through the nanostructured surfaces of the detector such that the chemical compound and / or biological species are deposited between the nanoposts of a desired pixel. A droplet of liquid is moved across the surface to that desired pixel and is caused to penetrate the nanostructures of the pixel, thus contacting a reagent.

3D array integrated cells for the sampling and detection of air bound chemical and biological species

An integrated mesopump-sensor suitable for disposition in two- and three-dimensional arrays having small dimensions is disclosed. One mesopump is formed of an electrostatically attractable flexible diaphragm disposed through cavities or pumping chambers formed between two opposing electrostatically chargeable material layers. Fluid is pumped through the chambers by sequentially moving the diaphragm toward the first chargeable layer, then towards the second chargeable layer, which can pull and push the fluid through a series of chambers, and past the sensor. One group of sensors utilizes multiple and varied chemoresistive sensors which can vary in resistance differently in response to the presence of various analytes. Another group of sensors utilizes chemo-fluorescent sensors that fluoresce in the presence of particular analytes. Some mesopump-sensor systems can be manufactured using MEMS technology and can be coupled to controllers for sequencing the pumps and analyzing sensor outputs using methods including Principle Component Analysis.

The shell is functionalized with amine or S-nitrosothiol groups both inside and outside the nanopores. A process to provide such nanoparticles involves hydrolyzing tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in a microemulsion of a superparamagnetic nanoparticle to form a superparamagnetic nanoparticle encapsulated by an incompletely hydrolyzed nanoporous silica shell, and hydrolyzing an amine-containing compound or a thiol-containing compound in situ in the presence of the incompletely hydrolyzed nanoporous silica shell before hydrolysis and densification of the silica shell is complete to functionalize the nanoporous silica shell with amine or thiol groups both inside and outside the nanopores and to maintain nanoporosity of the shell. Such magnetic nanoparticles are useful as carriers for chemical or biological species, particularly for magnetic resonance imaging, optical imaging, targeted drug delivery, cell delivery and magnetic separation applications.
