High speed demodulation systems for fiber optic grating sensors

Fiber optic grating sensor demodulation systems are described that offer high speed and multiplexing options for both single and multiple parameter fiber optic grating sensors. To attain very high speeds for single parameter fiber grating sensors ratio techniques are used that allow a series of sensors to be placed in a single fiber while retaining high speed capability. These methods can be extended to multiparameter fiber grating sensors. Optimization of speeds can be obtained by minimizing the number of spectral peaks that must be processed and it is shown that two or three spectral peak measurements may in specific multiparameter applications offer comparable or better performance than processing four spectral peaks. Combining the ratio methods with minimization of peak measurements allows very high speed measurement of such important environmental effects as transverse strain and pressure.

Focusing systems for perspective dimensional measurements and optical metrology

Focusing systems for which variation of magnification with focus is either inherently compensated, or is calibrated and corrected. The required conditions for inherent compensation are determined, and the desired state is called constant relative magnification. It is shown that telecentricity does not guarantee constant relative magnification. Both telecentric and non-telecentric accessory cameras for endoscopes are disclosed that have constant relative magnification, as are additional optical systems for general metrological purposes. Methods for calibrating change in relative magnification and deviation of the optical axis with focal shift are disclosed, as are methods for incorporating these changes into perspective dimensional measurements. Embodiments are disclosed in which only a single quantity need be measured to perform the correction, and these embodiments require only a low-resolution position transducer to provide accurate measurements. Apparatus is disclosed that enables an accessory camera to be aligned to an endoscope using only externally accessible adjustments. This apparatus also makes it possible to de-mount the camera from one endoscope and re-mount it to another without requiring any recalibration.

Compressive load sensor by capacitive measurement

A thin, flat capacitive load sensor, such as of layered sandwich construction, having a variety of shapes, so as to provide a seal between two or more opposing surfaces. The load sensor includes a thin first and second insulating outer layer between which an inner layer is secured. The inner layer can be formed of dielectric material of a known dielectric constant, with at least one thin electrical conductor to accommodate load sensing disposed against a first face, and another thin electrical conductor to accommodate load sensing disposed against a second face. Electrical conductors connect the thin conductive areas on the first and second faces to the distal end of a tab ending beyond the load or connection measurement area. The distal end of the tab accommodates a connection with electrical measurement apparatus. As the inner layer is compressed, the spacing between the electrically conductive areas on the opposing faces is decreased such that compressive forces can be measured as a function of the changes in capacitance of the sensor. In this manner, proper compression can be achieved by monitoring capacitance during installation. Follow-up sampling or continuous measurement of sensor compression provides early detection prior to failure to allow corrective action.

A detection system in which a single sensor is employed to detect an extensive range of a parameter. The output signal from the sensor is fed to the input of the electrical circuit, having a feedback loop, wherein the electrical circuit has a non-linear transfer characteristic. The non-linear transfer characteristic is achieved by changing the behavior of the feedback loop of the electrical circuit at a predetermined level of input signal. The output of the circuit has a proportional relationship with the input until the input signal reaches this predetermined value, whereupon the behaviors of the feedback loop changes and the relationship of the output to the input of the circuit changes. While the input signal is above the predetermined value, the output of the circuit has a linear but disproportionate relationship with the input at a gradient different to that when the input signal is below the predetermined value. Further, the behavior of the feedback loop changes to create a knee point in the response between the proportional and the linear parts of the characteristic. In this way, an overall non-linear transfer characteristic is produced by the electrical circuit, the transfer characteristic having with a well-defined knee point. The resolution of input signals below the knee point may be greater than the resolution of signals above the knee point.
