Apparatus and method for separation of particles suspended in a liquid from the liquid in which they are suspended

A method for separating, or removing, particulate material, e.g., blood cells, from a sample of fluid, e.g., whole blood of a patient, in which the particulate material is suspended. In the case of separating blood cells from blood plasma or blood serum, the resulting samples of blood plasma or blood serum can be used for in vitro diagnostic applications. In normal practice, a whole blood sample of a patient are provided and then introduced into an apparatus that contains a flow channel. An acoustic field, which contains acoustic standing waves from external ultrasonic transducers, is located within the flow channel. Laminar flow is maintained in the flow channel. Blood cells and platelets are separated from blood plasma or blood serum at the end of the flow channel and collected. The method described herein allows fluid components to differentially migrate to areas of preferred acoustic interaction. The parameters that affect separation of particles are size, density, compressibility of the particles, and the fluid surrounding the particles.

Lamp

A lamp comprises a housing, a heat sink, a light emitting member, a fan and a blocking ring. The housing includes an outlet section and an inlet section formed on the wall thereof. The heat sink is mounted inside the housing and includes a base plate and a plurality of fins, with the fins being close to the outlet section of the housing and arranged around the base plate to form a chamber. Each of the fins has a first end facing the inlet section of the housing and a second end connecting with the base plate. The light emitting member is fixed to the base plate of the heat sink. The fan is fixed inside the chamber of the heat sink. The blocking ring is mounted inside the housing and between the inlet section and the heat sink and includes an inlet hole aligned with the chamber of the heat sink. By the blocking ring, parts of the heated air flows are blocked from flowing back to the inlet section to avoid turbulence resulting from flowing back air flows. Consequently, the air flows risen by the fan and receiving the heat inside the housing can flow smoothly to out of the housing through the outlet section to enhance heat dissipating efficiency of the heat sink and the fan.

Domestic water recycling apparatus and fluid contamination detection system therefor

A domestic water recycling system using a combination of an optical detector to detect certain smaller sized (non-filtered) contaminants and a filter to remove larger sized (filtered) contaminants provides an efficient wastewater recycling system. Optical detection of contaminants determines whether water is discharged or filtered and recycled. The optical detection system can use several discrete optical wavelengths that are passed through the fluid, and can determine a relative presence of the contaminants based on the resulting wavelength response. A recycling shower using optical detection, an electronically actuated directional device and pump and a controller allows for automatic recycling or discharging of water without requiring user input. The system may include a turbulence reduction baffle in a collection chamber, and a disinfection unit for the recycled water.

Limited loss laminar flow dampers for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems

HVAC devices, systems, and methods include dampers for controlling the flow of air or other gasses through an HVAC duct, often while inhibiting turbulence within the duct or pressure loss within the duct. Embodiments of such dampers may employ a two-part damper arrangement. In many embodiments, flow will travel through the middle of the damper uniformly and with a laminar flow. One or more small, relatively unobtrusive sensor (optionally being wireless) can be included for controlling operation of the damper, the sensor(s) optionally measuring the distance between damper elements, sound, air flow, or the like, with such sensor(s) / damper combination inhibiting inadvertent pressure drop and turbulence in flows through the damper. The damper elements may optionally comprise airfoil cross-sections, with alternative dampers having a resilient helical configuration that can choke down flow by inducing a vortex in the flow, allowing static pressure regain to occur within the duct system.

Power generation directly from compressed air for exploiting wind and solar power

This invention relates to a Compressed Air Turbine-Generator, or CAT-G that will enable the ability to manage energy gathered from ecologically friendly sources, such as solar and wind power. Compressed Air Energy Storage, (C.A.E.S.), is a promising mode of clean energy storage. A major challenge facing this technology is the need to efficiently convert the compressed air energy into electricity. Conventionally, high-pressure air is used only to improve the efficiency of a conventional jet powered turbine generator. The focus herein is on a new technology that efficiently converts the energy stored in compressed air directly into electrical power without producing greenhouse byproduct gases or other pollutants. This new capability will add important flexibility to the optimization of ecologically friendly energy systems.
