Fluidics system for sequential delivery of reagents

The invention provides a passive fluidics circuit for directing different fluids to a common volume, such as a reaction chamber or flow cell, without intermixing or cross contamination. The direction and rate of flow through junctions, nodes and passages of the fluidics circuit are controlled by the states of upstream valves (e.g. opened or closed), differential fluid pressures at circuit inlets or upstream reservoirs, flow path resistances, and the like. Free diffusion or leakage of fluids from unselected inlets into the common outlet or other inlets at junctions or nodes is prevented by the flow of the selected inlet fluid, a portion of which sweeps by the inlets of unselected fluids and exits the fluidics circuit by waste ports, thereby creating a barrier against undesired intermixing with the outlet flow through leakage or diffusion. The invention is particularly advantageous in apparatus for performing sensitive multistep reactions, such as pH-based DNA sequencing reactions.

Plug housing with attached cantilevered latch for a fiber optic connector

A novel forward-facing, aft-attached cantilever beam is provided as a latch for securing a fiber optic connector to a receptacle. The beam has engagement structure on its free end which attaches to the receptacle. The connector includes a plug housing formed from a member having a forward end and a rearward end and an axial passageway therethrough through which at least one optical fiber provided in the fiber optic cable extends. The forward end is inserted into the receptacle with the rearward end extending from the receptacle. The cantilevered beam has an end fixed to a rearward portion of the member and its free end extends forwardly toward the forward end of the member. To engage the connector with the receptacle, the free end of the cantilevered beam is biased toward the member and the member is slid into the receptacle. Once fully inserted, the engagement structure on the cantilevered beam engages retention structure in the receptacle. The connector can be released from engagement with the receptacle by biasing the cantilevered beam such that the engagement structure on the beam is released from the retention structure of the receptacle and thereafter pulling the connector out of the receptacle.

Anthropomorphic phantoms and method

An anthropomorphic phantom used as a training tool by healthcare workers for learning ultrasonic imaging procedures. The phantom is made of a moldable, elastomeric tissue-simulating chemical composition that may be easily processed to create an anthropomorphic phantom: that has the “look and feel” and self-sealing characteristics of human tissue. During the mixing processes, scattering agents and pigments may be added to provide a phantom that simulates the sonographic characteristics on living tissue. The phantom body may contain objects and empty or liquid filled cavities and conduits that simulate normal internal structures and abnormal artifacts and conditions. In one embodiment, hollow rods are disposed longitudinally inside the primary mold that forms blood vessels inside the phantom. When the phantom is removed from the primary mold, the hollow rods are removed thereby forming a hollow conduit. Two plugs may be inserted into the ends of the conduit to hold a blood simulating liquid placed inside the conduit.
