Catalytic steam gasification process with recovery and recycle of alkali metal compounds

A high efficiency gasification process for converting carbonaceous solids to methane and apparatus for its practice are described. The process includes reacting steam and carbonaceous solids comprising ash in the presence of alkali metal catalyst in a gasification reactor to produce combustible gases and char particles comprising ash and alkali metal catalyst constituents, treating a stream of such char particles in an alkali metal catalyst recovery system to recover the catalyst constituents as alkali metal compounds, and recycling such recovered compounds. Within the alkali metal catalyst recovery system the process includes quenching the stream of char particles with water whereby such particles are cooled and fractured, dissolving soluble alkali metal catalyst constituents from the fractured solids to form a first alkali metal catalyst solution and washed solids, optionally reacting the washed solids in alkaline solution to form a second alkali metal catalyst solution, upgrading said first and optional second alkali solution to recover the alkali metal catalyst constituents as said alkali metal compounds.

Hydraulically integrated solids/liquid separation system for wastewater treatment

A system and method for treating wastewater includes a treatment container for receiving and treating wastewater and a mixing / aeration system disposed in the treatment container. Wastewater is pumped under pressure from the treatment container through a solids / liquid separation system, preferably comprising multiple parallel membrane bioreactors, to separate the solids and liquids in the wastewater. Liquid retentate from the solids / liquid separation system is cycled back to the treatment container via the mixing / aeration system. The closed-loop system and method for solids / liquid separation and aeration / mixing provides for reduced equipment requirements and energy usage during operation.

Passive, thermocycling column heat-exchanger system

A heat exchanger system suitable for facilitating the economical cooling of hot fluids in the vicinity of a body of water. The preferred embodiment of the present invention contemplates a vertical, or combination vertical and horizontal thermosyphonic, passive, heat exchanger column situated in a body of water and enveloped by a caisson or the like, and configured to facilitate, through percolation, enhanced circulation of seawater therethrough and effecting significant cooling of a hot, hydrocarbon well stream, or other hot fluid in the vicinity of a body of water. A vertically situated bundle of tubes forms the heat exchanger, which may include a system of staggered baffles to direct the flow of cooling seawater to effect even temperature distribution throughout the tube bundle. The present system further teaches a system for cooling high pressure, hot fluids as may be found in a deep hydrocarbon reserve offshore, utilizing a the vertical heat exchange column of the present invention. Upon passing through the system, a gaseous fluid stream, significantly cooled, should experience a commensurate pressure reduction and allow the use of conventional pipeline materials. The present system dispenses with the necessity of providing expensive, pro-active cooling, generally expending significant fuel, or the necessity of constructing an expensive, high pressure, non-corrosive pipeline of, for example, titanium or the like.

Apparatus and method for providing reduced cost cellular service

Systems and methods for providing telephone service to transient or inaccessible customers include a stationary cellular telephone that operates like a land-line telephone in that its use is restricted to a single geographic area, such a house address. The stationary cellular telephone can only handoff between cell sites that are associated with the geographic area. The stationary cellular telephone can place calls using only cell sites in a list of permissible cell sites that is maintained at the network level. The stationary cellular telephone is activated by sending customer, device, and / or location identifiers to an activation center via a telephone call. The activation center validates service, and downloads the list of permissible cell sites to the stationary cellular telephone. Dynamic rates provide opportunities for further reduction in the cost of service, with real-time notification of capacity based pricing, and service levels that vary according to network capacity.

Engine with gaseous and/or liquid fuel injector

In one example, a system for a vehicle travelling on a surface is described. The system includes an engine with a cylinder. The cylinder includes a fuel injector that is supplied with gaseous fuel and liquid fuel by a fuel delivery system. The fuel injector is mounted in the vehicle such that the fuel injector inlet faces at least partially toward the road surface. The orientation of the fuel injector enables a quick transition from liquid fuel to gaseous fuel because the gaseous fuel can rise to the injectors and be preferentially injected. Further, various approaches are described from transitioning operation between gaseous and liquid fuel injection.

Process for removing protein aggregates and virus from a protein solution

A process is provided for selectively removing protein aggregates from a protein solution in a normal flow (NFF) filtration process. Preferably, it relates to a process for selectively removing protein aggregates from a protein solution in a normal flow (NFF) filtration process and virus particles from a protein solution in a two-step filtration process. In a first step, a protein solution is filtered through one or more layers of adsorptive depth filters, charged or surface modified microporous membranes or a small bed of chromatography media in a normal flow filtration mode of operation, to produce a protein aggregate free stream. The aggregate free protein stream can then be filtered through one or more ultrafiltration membranes to retain virus particles at a retention level of at least 3 LRV and to allow passage therethrough of an aggregate free and virus free protein solution.

Apparatus and method for providing dynamic communications network traffic control

Systems and methods for controlling traffic on a communications network include dynamic and flexible control plans that enable service providers to control or influence customer access to communications facilities. Communications facilities are monitored to identify network elements, such as cell sites, that are overloaded. When the traffic intensity on a particular facility exceeds a predetermined level, either active or passive control is imposed on subscribers that are in the geographic area of the facility. Active control involves blocking, delaying or disrupting subscriber calls during the critical time period. Passive control involves providing cost incentives or disincentives during low or peak periods of traffic intensity. Customers are notified of the commencement and / or termination of active or passive control preferably via SMS. When implemented with stationary cellular service, the systems and methods aid in traffic engineering and provide opportunities for customers to reduce the cost and increase the accessibility of telephone service.

Systems And Methods For Concentrating Waste Water Fluids

A method and apparatus for processing waste water generated during oilfield drilling operations with a mobile processing unit utilizing heat energy sourced from burning hydrocarbon fuel directly and / or capturing and using the exhaust heat energy generated by burning hydrocarbons in engines such as diesel engines in order to vaporize a dominant mass of the aqueous phase of the waste water while clarifying the heat source combustion gasses. The water vapor generated by the vaporization process may be discharged directly to the atmosphere or alternately condensed and captured for use as portable water. The residual waste water is thereby concentrated and the cost to dispose of the waste water is greatly reduced.

Solar-Powered Floatation Device for all types of vehicles (air, land and sea)

The device that we have invented is designed with the following components: 1. an array of solar cell panels to provide power 2. a computerized control panel, 3. a series of pre-arranged balloons or air bags 4. pump or compressor, storage tank, batteries and a pillow-shaped design body. The way the device works is that with power supplied by the solar cells the series of pumps shall pump helium gas from the tanks into a predetermined number of balloons distributed all throughout the vehicle. The number of balloons that shall be filled with helium are controlled by the onboard computer system. Once most of the balloons are filled, the buoyancy of the helium-filled balloons will reduce the weight of the vehicle corresponding to the number of balloons being inflated; the more balloons that are inflated, the lighter the vehicle becomes. To return to its normal weight, all the vehicle operator has to do is to reverse the pump to deflate the balloon and causing the return of the helium gas back to the tank. Batteries shall provide power for nighttime operation.
