An intraluminal prosthesis is provided with a plurality of annular elements. Each annular element includes a plurality of struts and apices connected to form an annular configuration. Each annular element has a compressed state and an expanded state, and has a longitudinal dimension which is smaller in the expanded state than in the compressed state. A plurality of connecting members connect the apices of adjacent annular elements. The connecting members have a plurality of alternating segments that function to compensate for the smaller longitudinal dimension of each annular element in the expanded state. The stent may be provided with varying flexibility along its length and/or circumference, and may include segments that have different diameters.

The present invention relates to a stent including a variable porosity, tubular structure having pores defined by structural surfaces. The tubular structure has a low porosity region in proximity to or at either end of the tubular structure, where the low porosity region is less porous than other regions located on the tubular structure and fully or partially obstructs passage of fluid. Any arcuate path that starts at one point within the low porosity region and goes around the perimeter of the tubular structure to stop at the same point within the low porosity region must have at least a portion that is outside of the low porosity region. The current invention discloses a delivery catheter with a selectively formable distal section. The catheter comprises a central lumen that is configured to receive a puncture catheter that is used for puncturing the septum of a heart and to emplace devices used for treating mitral regurgitation. The delivery catheter includes control members disposed in a control lumen, and a plurality curved areas can be selectively formed in the distal section of the delivery catheter by applying tension to the control members. A first curve is shaped to conform to the interior of a heart chamber and a combination of the first curve and a second curve allows a clinician to manipulate the distal end of the catheter for selection of the proper vector for deploying a treatment device, or for guiding a treatment device around obstacles in a heart chamber.

A medical flow restrictor that may be used to exclude a saccular aneurysm from the circulatory system. The device, a thin walled, foil-like shell, is compacted for delivery. The invention includes the device, electroforming fabrication methods, delivery assemblies, and methods of placing, and using, the device. A device with an aneurysm lobe and an artery lobe self-aligns its waist at the neck of an aneurysm as the device shell is pressure expanded. Negative pressure is used to collapse both the aneurysm lobe and the artery lobe, captivating the neck of the aneurysm and securing the device. The device works for aneurysms at bifurcations and aneurysms near side-branch arteries. The device, unlike endovascular coiling, excludes the weak neck of the aneurysm from circulation, while leaving the aneurysm relatively empty. Unlike stent-based exclusion, the device does not block perforator arteries. This exclusion device can also limit flow through body lumens or orifices.

An intraluminal device implantable in a blood vessel having an aneurysm therein in the vicinity of a perforating vessel and/or of a bifurcation leading to a branch vessel. The intraluminal device includes a mesh-like tube of bio-compatible material having an expanded condition in which the tube diameter is slightly larger than the diameter of the blood vessel in which it is to be implanted, and the tube length is sufficient to straddle the aneurysm and to be anchored to the blood vessel on the opposite sides of the aneurysm. The mesh-like tube also has a contracted condition wherein it is sufficiently flexible so as to be easily manipulatable through the blood vessel to straddle the aneurysm. In its expanded condition, the mesh-like tube has a porosity index of 55%-80% such as to reduce the flow of blood through its wall to the aneurysm sufficiently to decrease the possibility of rupture of the aneurysm but not to unduly reduce the blood flow to a perforating or branch vessel to the degree likely to cause significant damage to tissues supplied with blood by such perforating or branch vessel.

The present invention includes methods and materials for implantable devices (markers) which are disclosed for permanently marking the location of a biopsy or surgery for the purpose of identification. The devices are remotely delivered, preferably percutaneously. Visualization of the markers is readily accomplished using various state of the art imaging systems. Preferred visualization is through MRI, X-ray and ultrasound. The markers function to provide evidence of the location of the lesion after the procedure is complete for reference during future examinations or procedures.

A catheter for a self-expanding stent includes a proximal shaft with a longitudinal guide way along the length of the proximal shaft, a guide member for accessing a guidewire lumen defined by the proximal shaft and for drawing a guidewire into and out of the guidewire lumen along the proximal shaft. In one aspect, the catheter includes a proximal sliding mechanism coupled to a link, which is coupled to a distal outer shaft retaining a self-expanding stent in a compressed state. The sliding mechanism draws the link proximally, which draws the distal outer shaft proximally thereby allowing the stent to radially expand. In another aspect, the proximal sliding mechanism is coupled to a proximal shaft, which is coupled to the distal outer shaft. The sliding mechanism draws the proximal shaft proximally, which draws the distal outer shaft proximally to thereby allow the stent to radial expand.

A self-expanding stent delivery apparatus having a sheath comprising a hard and lubricious coating for the safe, effective and accurate deployment of self-expanding stents. The sheath comprises an inner layer of pyrolytic carbon or other similar substance which prevents the stent from becoming embedded. The inner layer is also lubricious. This combination of properties allows for easier deployment and reduced profile.

An instrument for implanting an expandable cylindrical vascular prosthesis includes an outer tube and an inner tube which can be displaced relative to one another. The inner tube is longitudinally slotted on the distal end, at least in an area thereof, and ensheathes the stent with this area which includes the longitudinal slot. In order to implant the stent, the outer tube is retracted. The stent then expands with continuous retracting movement of the outer tube and the inner tube is pressed open along the longitudinal slot. Implantation is terminated, when the outer tube is retracted along the entire length of the stent. The implantation is reversible by pushing the outer tube forward, as long as the stent has not yet fully exited the instrument. In this way, the inner tube is constricted together with the stent, and compressed to an initial position.

A method of deploying multiple stents using a multiple stent delivery system includes moving a distal stent into contact with a stent-holding surface of a compressible expanded tip of an inner member. A sheath is retracted relative to the inner member to deploy the distal stent by holding the distal stent stationary with the inner member and retracting the sheath. The sheath is advanced relative to the inner member to reposition a proximal stent to capture, be positioned behind a next stent to be deployed by being compressed and passing the compressible expanded tip through the next proximal stent. The sheath is retracted relative to the inner member to bring the next stent to a pre-deployment position and then deployment of the next proximal stent can take place as already performed for the first deployed stent.

The present invention relates to an endovascular prosthesis. The endovascular prosthesis comprises a first expandable portion expandable from a first, unexpanded state to a second, expanded state to urge the first expandable portion against a vascular lumen and a retractable leaf portion attached to the first expandable portion. The retractable leaf portion comprises at least one spine portion and a plurality of rib portions attached to the spine portion. In one preferred embodiment of the present endovascular prosthesis, the retractable leaf portion is configured such that a pair of ribs attached on opposite sides of a longitudinally straightened configuration of the spine portion in a plane of view normal to a central axis of the prosthesis defines a shape, in two dimensions, that is substantially non-circular. In another preferred embodiment of the present endovascular prosthesis, the retractable leaf portion is configured such that a pair of ribs attached on opposite sides of a longitudinally straightened configuration of the spine portion in a plane of view normal to a central axis of the prosthesis defines a shape, in two dimensions, through which one straight line can be translated from one side to the other side of the shape so as to traverse the shape only once at every point along the shape. The rib portions of the present endovascular prosthesis can be designed so as to provide an improved rotational range of proper placement of the prosthesis with respect to the opening of the aneurysm. In a preferred embodiment, the rotational range may be as much as 45° or more. There is also described a method for delivering an endovascular prosthesis to a bifurcated artery which can be accomplished using a single guidewire and a single delivery device.

A stent delivery system includes a catheter shaft defining two lumens, for respectively receiving a guidewire and a fiber optic cable having a viewing capability. Specifically, the fiber optic cable has a first (e.g., proximal) end and a second (e.g., distal) end, and is adapted for transmitting illumination light from its first end to its second end while transmitting an image from its second end to its first end. The system further includes a stent positioned over the catheter shaft, and may also include means for deploying the stent. The stent may be of a self-expanding type or of an inflation type. The fiber optic cable is used to visually inspect proper deployment of the stent before, during, and after the stent deployment.

A method for sealing a hole in a bodily organ includes introducing a first member and a second member into the bodily organ, the first and second members being connected by an elongated member. The first and second members are retracted proximally until the first member abuts an inner surface of the bodily organ and the second member is retracted out of the hole in the bodily organ. The present disclosure concerns a delivery system for delivering a medically useful payload through the vasculature to a site of interest in the patient's body. The medically useful payload may be a therapeutic device, such as a stent, and it may be a diagnostic tool, such as an imaging device. Owing to its structural attributes, the presently-inventive delivery system is well suited for carrying medical payload to and through vessel curvature and to branched regions (i.e., bifurcations) in same.
