Computer-implemented automated building design and modeling and project cost estimation and scheduling system

A computer-implemented automated building design and modeling and construction project cost estimating and scheduling system (“DMES system”) is described. The DMES system provides a central source for all of the design and construction information for a construction project in a coordinated two-dimensional and three-dimensional spatial database that is freely accessible by all of the members of an interdisciplinary construction project team as a means to produce automatically coordinated design development and construction document information. The DMES system acquires and stores all of the appropriate design, engineering, and construction expertise and information available for any building type for use in automatically assembling and coordinating the design, cost-estimating, and scheduling for a construction project. In one embodiment, the DMES system consists of a plurality of objects, comprising elements and massing elements arranged in an assembly hierarchy. Each of the objects includes programming code that defines an interface and discrete internal functions that define its behavior. When instantiated in the database, the objects automatically create further instances of other objects in the hierarchy, which in turn do the same, thus assembling a complete building model automatically from the initial manually-placed instance. The building model enables automatic generation of drawings and cost and scheduling information. By running automatic iterations of the building model, multiple designs may be evaluated to determine the optimum design.

Transgenic systems for the manufacture of poly (3-hydroxy-butyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate)

Methods for engineering transgenic organisms that synthesize polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) containing 3-hydroxyhexanoate as comonomer have been developed. These processes are based on genetically engineered bacteria such as Escherichia coli or in plant crops as production systems which include PHA biosynthetic genes from PHA producers. In a preferred embodiment of the method, additional genes are introduced in wild type or transgenic polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) producers, thereby creating new strains that synthesize 3HH monomers which are incorporated into PHAs. The 3HH monomer preferably is derived in microbial systems using butanol or butyrate as feedstocks, which are precursors of 3-hydroxyhexanoyl-CoA. Pathways for in vivo production of butyrol-CoA specifically encompassing butyryl-CoA dehydrogenase activity are provided.

Method and device for producing optical material, and an optical waveguide

The invention relates to the production of light-amplifying optical material. Liquid reactant is atomized into droplets using a high velocity gas. The droplets are subsequently introduced into a flame. Reactants are oxidized in the flame and condensed by forming small particles. At least a fraction of said particles is collected and fused to form optical waveguide material, which is subsequently drawn to form an optical waveguide. According to the invention, the velocity of the atomizing gas stream is in the order of the velocity of sound. The high velocity enhances atomization and increases reaction rates in the flame. The residence times are reduced to such a degree that unwanted phase transformations in the produced particles are substantially minimized. Consequently, very homogeneous material is produced. Especially, in the production of erbium-doped silica, low percentage of clustered erbium ions is achieved.
