A pacemaker provides multi-chamber pacing with a pacing interval that can be programmed and adapted in response to cardiac output measurements for a given patient. In a typical embodiment, the pacemaker may provide pacing stimuli to both ventricles of a heart. In addition, the invention may include a measurement device that incorporates first and second blood oxygen saturation sensors for deployment in the left and right ventricle. The oxygen saturation sensors provide a differential measurement that can be used to calculate cardiac output in accordance with the Fick method. The oxygen saturation sensors may be carried by a common trans-septal lead that positions one of the sensors proximate the right ventricle and the other sensor proximate the left ventricle. Alternatively, the oxygen saturation sensors may be deployed via separate leads. Whether single or dual leads are used to carry the oxygen saturation sensors, a respective lead may optionally carry electrodes for sensing, pacing, or both.

A replication process to provide fault tolerance for a streaming signal in a computer network. In one embodiment, the original or source signal is sent to several splitters which, in turn, each make copies of the signal and send the copies into a second layer of devices, which are referred to as “concentrators.” A given concentrator receives as input one or more copies of the source signal. In a preferred embodiment, a given concentrator receives two copies of the source signal from at least two different splitters. The concentrators process the incoming streaming signal copies, for example, by merging them into a single or composite copy of the original source signal according to a given processing algorithm. The output of a given concentrator may then be fed into a splitter, with the process then being repeated if desired to make an arbitrary large number of copies of the signal. At the end of the replication process, the output of a splitter or a concentrator is fed directly or indirectly to an end user. The replication process is fault-tolerant, and thus the end user's signal is not interrupted regardless of signal or equipment problems within the distribution mechanism.

A fault tolerant processing circuit comprising at least three processor groupings, a synchronizing circuit and a fault logic circuit. Each of the processor groupings have a plurality of processor grouping inputs and a plurality of processor grouping outputs. The synchronizing circuit comprises a plurality of output synchronizers, wherein each output synchronizer communicates with a corresponding respective processor grouping for synchronizing the output of each processor grouping. A fault logic circuit communicates with the synchronizing circuit. The fault logic circuit comprises a fault detection circuit and a fault mask circuit. The fault logic circuit compares the plurality of processor group outputs to detect errors in any one of the plurality of processor group outputs. An error is detected when none of the at least three processor groups is in a majority of the processor groups. Upon a detected fault, the fault mask circuit masks the output of the respective processor grouping associated with a detected error and signals a detected error. The error signal latch is then used to reset the processor groupings.

A method and apparatus for the non-invasive measurement of cardiac function. A signal is applied between a pair of electrodes on a patient. The signal delivers a constant alternating current at multiple simultaneous frequencies. A second pair of electrodes measures a voltage signal. The impedance at each frequency is obtained by demodulating the current signal and the voltage signal using techniques such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The FFT gives a phase and amplitude which is converted to an impedance value. The impedance values are fitted to a theoretical frequency dependent impedance locus and the locus is extrapolated to obtain a value at zero frequency. The steps are repeated to obtain a time-varying plot of impedance and measures of cardiac function are calculated from the time-varying plot.
