Humidifying gas induction or supply system

Water vapor is introduced into an inlet air stream (16) of an engine (12), for example, by a pervaporation process through a non-porous hydrophilic membrane (18). A water reservoir (20), which can contain contaminated water, provides a vapor pressure gradient across the hydrophilic membrane (18) into the inlet air stream (16), while the rate of delivery of the water vapor to a cylinder (38-40) is self-regulated by the rate of flow of air across the membrane. The hydrophilic membrane (18) therefore also filters the water from the water reservoir (20) to an extent that pure water vapor is provided to the air inlet stream (16). Delivery of water vapor can nevertheless be controlled using a hood (26) that slides over the hydrophilic membrane to limit its exposed surface area. Alternatively, water vapor is introduced into one or more of the gas streams of a fuel cell by separating the gas stream from the wet exhaust gas stream by a hydrophilic membrane such that moisture passes across the membrane to moisten the gas stream and thereby prevent drying out of the proton exchange membrane.

Refrigeration apparatus

A refrigeration apparatus uses a refrigerant that operates in a supercritical range. The refrigeration apparatus includes a compression mechanism, a heat source-side heat exchanger, an expansion mechanism, a usage-side heat exchanger, a switching mechanism, an intercooler, a bypass tube, and an injection tube. The switching mechanism is configured to switch between cooling and heating operation states. When the switching mechanism is switched to the cooling operation state to allow refrigerant to flow to the heat source-side heat exchanger and a reverse cycle defrosting operation for defrosting the heat source-side heat exchanger is performed, the refrigerant is caused to flow to the heat source-side heat exchanger, the intercooler and the injection tube. After the defrosting of the intercooler is detected as being complete, the bypass tube is used so as to ensure that the refrigerant does not flow to the intercooler and the injection valve is controlled so that the opening degree is increased.

Apparatus and method for optimizing the use of oxygen in the direct reduction of iron

An apparatus and method for adjusting the parameters of a reducing gas stream prior to introduction into a direct reduction furnace, such parameters including temperature of the gas stream, and amount of hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen contained in the reducing gas. The apparatus is placed in-line with the reducing gas recycle loop of a direct reduction furnace, which has an enrichment section which introduces hydrocarbon components to the main stream, and an oxygen / fuel injection system, located downstream from the enrichment section, which injects a shrouded stream of oxygen and hydrocarbon gas into the reducing gas stream. Temperature, carbon monoxide content, and hydrogen content of the reducing gas are adjusted by controlling the flow of oxygen and the ratio of hydrocarbon to oxygen injected in the oxygen / fuel injection system. Hydrocarbon content of the reducing gas is adjusted primarily by controlling the flow rate of the enrichment section.

Thermoforming process for masked polymers

In a thermoforming system for masked polymer substrate sheets, a temperature resistant, non-stick coating is applied to a sheet of a polymer substrate material. The coated sheet is positioned on a flexible platen positioned over a mold having a predetermined shape. Heat is applied until the polymer reaches a thermoforming temperature and softens, whereupon the platen is lowered to stretch over and cover the mold. When the sheet begins to conform to the mold, the heat is withdrawn and a second platen is lowered over the sheet to urge it into conformance with the mold. The temperature resistant coating can be applied over an existing polymer film masking, and rapidly cures to form a non-stick surface which prevents adhesion of the masked polymer sheet to the platen surfaces.
