Coloration or discoloration of a body part by pigment

Correction of "red-eye" effects in images

After identification of an image or image area where correction is to be effected for red-eye defects, and identification of eye regions within the image or the image area, color data from the area is provided, collected or analyzed according to color channel information. The color channel information may be defined for specific or collections of wavelength values or color content values, usually with at least two channels, up to four or more color channels used to carry all of the information (and with digital images, pixel information) for each color. By using color channel information, local color content information can be readily accessed and evaluated, and after the exact nature or degree of a red-eye effect is determined from evaluation of the color channel information, the data may be readily corrected by a number of different techniques. Templates of colors and / or templates for features (such as glint, pigmentation, or artistic features) may be added to identified regions to be corrected for red-eye

Method and apparatus for dermatological treatment and tissue reshaping

The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for providing electromagnetic radiation or other energy to tissue. An array of needles can be inserted at least partially into the tissue, and energy, e.g., optical energy, can be provided to the needles. The needles can include an optical waveguide configured to direct the energy to needle tips located within the tissue adjacent to one or more target regions. The energy can thus be provided directly to the target regions through the needles without being absorbed by upper portions of the tissue. Such method and apparatus can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including wrinkles and pigmentation defects. One or more of the needles in the array can also be hollow and configured to provide an analgesic or other substance into the tissue near the target regions.

Method and apparatus for color matching of slightly colored translucent objects such as teeth and dental prosthesis, in particular

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for color matching of slightly colored objects which are transparent, diffusing an absorbent, by acuminating a small error of the objects with a first bunch of optical fibers. A second bunch of optical fibers is used to pick up the light back scattered from the area of the objects. The second fibers are located inside of the illuminating fibers. The light is measured at 3 wavelengths that correspond to blue, green and red colors and the pigmentation of the object is calculated as a difference between the red and blue spectrum components. Presentation of the brightness is calculated to be proportional to the green spectrum component. The pigmentation and brightness is then compared with the same perimeters of a standard shape pallet. The invention is particularly suitable for color matching the teeth in the mouth with dental prosthesis and dental restorative materials.

Eradication of Pigmentation and Scar Tissue

The invention is a non-surgical method for the eradication of pigmentation and scar tissue from an area of skin. The method comprises repeatedly puncturing the area of skin with an array of needles. As the needles are inserted into the skin, the needles and surface of the skin are washed with a clean solution. As the needles are withdrawn from the skin, the flow of clean solution ceases and the dirty solution, which contains cellular fluids and pigments released by the action of the needles, is removed from the surface. The invention is also a solution, which is used to clean the needles and to aid in destroying the pigment containing cells, and an apparatus, which is especially designed to move the needles into and out of the surface of the skin and to provide synchronization of the motion of the needles and flow of the solution such as to maximize the effectiveness of the method.

Use of optical skin measurements to determine cosmetic skin properties

The present invention relates to the use of optical skin measurements to determine skin properties such as surface topography, hydration, elasticity, pigmentation intensity or uniformity, dermal thickness, dermal perfusion, presence or concentration or composition of oil on or near the surface, and apparent age of the skin. An apparatus according to the present invention can comprise a skin positioning system for positioning the skin relative to other parts of the apparatus. An illumination system, adapted to produce illumination radiation, can mount with the skin positioning system such that illumination radiation impinges on a first portion of the skin at a first determined angle thereto. A detection system can mount with the skin positioning system such that radiation from a second portion of the skin at a second determined angle therefrom impinges on the detector. An analysis system can receive information from the detection system, and determine one or more skin properties from the detected radiation and the illumination radiation.

Reflectance imaging and analysis for evaluating tissue pigmentation

Methods and apparatus are described that provide the ability to estimate the diffuse reflection component of an image of tissue such as skin captured without cross-polarization. It is thereby possible to estimate skin pigmentation information from an image of skin captured conventionally, such as, for example, a total reflection image, obtained in a conventional manner by shining white light on the skin and capturing the reflected light. The image may also be a partially diffuse reflection image, such as a low quality cross-polarized image. The diffuse reflection component of a captured image can then be further processed to obtain Red and Brown pigmentation images, useful for indicating the distribution of hemoglobin and melanin, the primary chromophores of skin. Additionally, a standard captured image of skin can be analyzed to obtain an estimate of the surface reflection component of the reflected light. The surface reflection component can then be used to generate a surface reflection image, useful for showing the distribution of light on the skin and to highlight superficial features such as wrinkles, fine lines, folds, pores, texture, and visible spots.

Method and Apparatus to Compensate for Melanin and Hemoglobin Variation in Determination of a Measure of a Glycation End-Product or Disease State Using Tissue Fluorescence

A method of determining a measure of a tissue state (e.g., glycation end-product or disease state) in an individual is disclosed. A portion of the skin of the individual is illuminated with excitation light, then light emitted by the tissue due to fluorescence of a chemical with the tissue responsive to the excitation light is detected. The detected light can be combined with a model relating fluorescence with a measure of tissue state to determine a tissue state. The invention can illuminate the skin and detect responsive light over a time that spans a plurality of cardiac cycles of the individual, which can, as an example, help mitigate the effects of time-varying signals such as those due to hemoglobin. The invention can also determine the amount of light to be directed to the skin, for example by controlling the time that a light source is energized. The amount of illumination light can be determined from a skin reflectance characteristic such as pigmentation or melanin in the skin. Controlling the amount of light directed to the tissue can reduce the dynamic range required of a corresponding optical system, for example by allowing a single system to accurately measure individuals with very light skin and individuals with very dark skin.
