Object oriented apparatus and method for providing a graphical user interface for host-based software applications

An object oriented computer apparatus and method provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for existing host-based (i.e., green screen) applications by defining some object oriented classes that reside on the client workstation, and by substituting function calls for display data in the green screen application with function calls that interface with the object oriented GUI defined by the classes. In this manner the present invention takes advantage of the processing power of client workstations in a network computing environment by having the client run the GUI. The underlying green screen application is modified to replace all display function calls with new function calls to the GUI, but this change is relatively minor and does not affect the underlying core logic of the application. In addition, the new function calls access the GUI screens directly without having to determine which screen is being displayed.

Process gas decomposition reactor

A process gas decomposition reactor featuring two intertwined helical coils surrounding a gas flow path. Each of the two coils is energized by a separate magnetron having an associated waveguide and an inductive structural element which couples the microwave energy into the coil. The magnetic flux lines from the coil serve to confine ions and electrons within the coil, causing collisions and hence ionization of gas entering a flow path through the coil. The gas, containing HFCs and PFCs is broken down by such collisions with ions and electrons within the gas plasma. The gas displaced at the end of the coil contains decomposition products from the HFCs and PFCs.

System and process for discovery of network-connected devices at remote sites using audio-based discovery techniques

A system and process for discovery between endpoint components and computing devices residing at remote locations from each other, in cases where the devices are connected to a common computer network, is presented. The present invention allows a device in one location to discover the network address of another device at a different location, which then allows the first device to negotiate with the discovered device to facilitate the transfer of data and other communications over the common network. However, this discovery is accomplished without the use of the common network. Rather the discovery process uses audible or inaudible audio signals transferred between the devices at two different locations using a communication medium, such as a telephone system.

Optical Modulator Utilizing Unary Encoding And Auxiliary Modulator Section For Load Balancing

An optical modulator is configured to include multiple modulating sections formed along each arm and create a unary-encoded optical output signal by driving the number of sections required to represent the data value being transmitted (e.g., three sections driven to represent the data value “3”, four sections driven to represent the data value “4”). An auxiliary modulating section, isolated from the optical signal path, is included for creating a path for current flow in situations where only an odd number of modulating sections are required to represent the data. The activation of the auxiliary modulation section minimizes the current imbalance that would otherwise be present along a common node of the arrangement.

Method and apparatus for monitoring optical signal-to-noise ratio

Optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring methods and apparatus are described. A tunable optical filter filters an optical channel containing an optical signal and noise. The total signal and noise power at the output of the filter is measured as the transmittance passband of the filter is varied and the maximum and minimum powers are determined. The ratio between the maximum and minimum powers is then used to determine the OSNR of the optical channel, which, for example, can be a wavelength channel in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system. The ratio of the maximum signal power to the minimum signal power and the ratio of the maximum noise power to the minimum noise power are pre-determined based on the signal modulation format type and filter passband characteristics. Because the OSNR monitoring method and apparatus rely on information obtained after spectrally filtering the signal and noise, their operation is independent of any transmission effect that does not affect the optical power spectra of the signal and the noise or affects them in a known manner. For example, effects such as chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), and changes in the signal degree of polarization (DOP) and noise DOP will not affect the OSNR reading thus obtained.

Bidirectional Sealing Mechanically Shifted Ball Valve for Downhole Use

A downhole ball valve is mounted n a string and features a rotating ball that turns on its axis as it is held against an upstream and a downstream seal by a cage. The cage accepts a slide that engages the ball off-center to rotate it between the open and closed positions. The slide is operated by a sleeve attached to a piston assembly. The sleeve is mechanically operated in opposed directions such as by a wireline shifting tool. Differential pressure on a closed ball does not affect the actuation piston because pressure across the actuating piston is balanced while holding pressure differential across the closed ball. A check valve allows the actuation piston to be in pressure balance as the ball stays closed.

Address autoconfiguration in ad hoc networks

The invention provides a system whereby a node can configure itself automatically with an address when it joins or establishes a network. Once the network is established, the nodes within that network exchange hello messages that are modified to give an indication of the network to which the nodes belongs. If two networks begin to merge with each other then the nodes at the edge of that network will receive hello messages from nodes which identify two different networks. When this occurs, the node can determine that network merging is occurring and carry out the process of duplicate address detection to ensure the uniqueness of its address within the entire combined network.
