Photochemical chemical oxygen demand (COD) sensor and method of measuring same

The invention provides a photochemical chemical oxygen demand (COD) electrode and a method of measuring the same. The working electrode is a nanometer titanium dioxide photocatalysis and photooxidation electrode and is arranged in a supported electrolyte solution cavity. After organic matters in the water sample under test enter the supported electrolyte solution cavity and reach the surface of the working electrode by a polytetrafluoroethylene filter element through diffusion, the working electrode generates photo-generated electrons and holes under the ultraviolet irradiation; the holes arecaptured by the organic matters and then catalyzed and oxidized by the organic matters; the photo-generated electrons are forced to flow to a counter electrode and a platinum electrode under the action of an external electric field; and the platinum electrode is captured by oxidant in an electrolyte solution cavity of the counter electrode to form the light current. The amperage of the light current depends on the speed the organic matters enter the supported electrolyte solution cavity through diffusion and is proportional to the concentration of the oxidizable organic matters in the water sample under test, i.e., the COD in the water sample under test. The outer surface of the polytetrafluoroethylene filter element is provided with an automatic cleaning brush which can clean the surfaceof the polytetrafluoroethylene filter element at regular time to prevent the polytetrafluoroethylene filter element from being blocked. The invention is very practical and is suitable for both outdoorconvenient measuring and long-time real-time monitoring.
