The subject is susceptible to, or has diabetes mellitus and has elevated non-fasting blood glucose, and / or elevated fasting blood glucose, and / or impaired glucose tolerance and / or elevated hemoglobin A1c levels. In particular, the present disclosure relates to the use of a HIF-1α inhibitor, wherein the HIF-1α inhibitor is administered to the subject, thereby maintaining or providing increased non-fasting plasma insulin levels in said subject.
