The reaction mixture contains phototrophic biomass available for growth in the reaction zone. In one aspect, the carbon dioxide feed is adjusted in response to the measured process parameters. In another aspect, the input to the reaction zone is adjusted in response to changes in the carbon dioxide feed. In another aspect, the carbon dioxide-containing feed is diluted. In another aspect, the pressure of the carbon dioxide-containing feed is increased. In another aspect, water is condensed from the carbon dioxide-containing feed and recovered for reuse. In another aspect, the phototrophic biomass produced is harvested at a rate close to a predetermined mass growth rate of said phototrophic biomass.
