3-D petri-dish for the culture and studies of cells

A three-dimensional (3-D) culture “Petri-dish” for research in regenerative medicine, biotechnology and clinical translation is described. This 3-D perfusion culture dish is to advance in vitro culture tools from static 2-D to dynamic 3-D perfusion culture. Interwoven hollow fiber capillary membranes divide the “Petri-dish” culture space into a controllable 3-D pattern of different compartments, serving the functions of the organ's larger vasculature. These physically active scaffolds, which can be suitable for cell adhesion or cell aggregate immobilization, offer a supply of cells with high-performance mass exchange including gas supply and under perfusion conditions. In contrast to static and discontinuous medium supply, a dynamic culture can be achieved with continuous or alternating medium supply and integral oxygenation. They provide a more physiologic supply in the cell macro environment, including homeostasis of oxygen, pH, nutrition, soluble factors, and gradients of metabolites for the cells. Also, medium perfusion can be achieved. Consequently the invention was made for cultures at tissue density, especially stem cells and support cells, which strive to create their own stem cell niche.

Battery module of high cooling efficiency

Disclosed herein is a battery module including a plurality of unit cells stacked one on another. The battery module has a cooling system that accomplishes contact type cooling by a coolant flowing through gaps (flow channels) defined between the unit cells, and the flow channels defined between the unit cells are at a predetermined angle to the flowing direction of the coolant at inlet ports of the flow channels. The contact rate of the coolant to the unit cells in the battery module is increased and a large number of turbulent flows are created by the changing the flow channel through which the coolant flows. Consequently, the occurrence of the velocity gradient of the coolant in the flow channel defined between the unit cells is prevented, and therefore, the cooling efficiency of the battery module is improved. Furthermore, a battery pack including the battery module has high cooling efficiency although the overall structure of the battery pack is not greatly changed, or a large-sized cooling fan or a string driving unit is not used. Consequently, the battery pack is preferably used as a power source for electric vehicles or hybrid electric vehicles.

Magnetic Device

A magnetic device to be surface mounted on a substantially planar thermally conductive surface comprises a circuit board containing a winding pattern having at least one winding and a magnetic core that is at least partially encompassing the winding pattern. On a bottom side of the circuit board a region corresponding to a substantial part of the winding pattern is covered by a thermally conductive material for thermally contacting the thermally conductive surface. A transformer arrangement comprises such a magnetic device as well as a thermally clad circuit board having a surface area covered by a thermally conductive material, corresponding to at least substantially the covered region on the bottom side of the circuit board. For assembly, the covered region on the bottom side of the circuit board is soldered to the covered region on the surface of the thermally clad circuit board. The extensive cover and thermal contact to the thermally conductive surface allows for heat transfer from the complete winding area, reducing the total thermal resistance and temperature gradients in the winding structure. The solution is inexpensive and easy to manufacture.

Fuel battery system

Fuel cells 100 of the invention are operable at a temperature of about 500° C. The unit cell has a solid oxide electrolyte layer formed on a hydrogen separable metal layer. An anode has a catalyst supported thereon to accelerate a reforming reaction of methane. A fuel gas is produced by reforming a hydrocarbon-containing material in a reformer 20. Setting a lower reaction temperature enables production of the fuel gas containing both methane and hydrogen. In the fuel cells 100 receiving a supply of the fuel gas, the reforming reaction of methane contained in the fuel gas proceeds simultaneously with consumption of hydrogen contained in the fuel gas. This methane reforming reaction is endothermic to absorb heat produced in the process of power generation and thereby equalizes the operation temperature of the fuel cells 100.

Magnetic resonance imaging device

An MRI apparatus having a configuration that reduces vibration of a static magnetic field generating source is provided. A closed vessel 2 of the static magnetic field generating source is provided with a rigid structure 4 for preventing transmission of vibration generated from a gradient magnetic field generating part 21 to other members via the closed vessel 2. The rigid structure 4 uses, for example, a connecting part 4 that connects a face 25 on the imaging space side and a face 26 confronting it. The rigidity of the closed vessel is thereby increased, and therefore vibration transmitted from the gradient magnetic field generating part can be reduced. The connecting part can have a through-hole structure, and in such a case, internal space of through-hole can be used for drawing cables.

Method for treating water containing ammonium-nitrogen

Raw water containing ammonium-nitrogen is introduced into a nitrification tank and nitrification of nitrite-nitrogen by nitrite oxidizing bacteria is inhibited according to inhibition of the ammonium-nitrogen, thereby conducting stable nitrification of nitrous acid type at a high load by the action of ammonium oxidizing bacteria. Carbonate and / or bicarbonate are added into the nitrification tank 1. The inorganic carbon concentration in the nitrification tank 1 is maintained at 35 mg-C / L or more. The nitrified liquid thus obtained is introduced into a denitrification tank and denitrification reaction is conducted by the action of denitrifying bacteria with the remaining ammonium-nitrogen as an electron donor and the nitrite-nitrogen as an electron acceptor.

Tangential discharge disk refiner

A papermaking refiner has two stationary disks mounted to the support structure of a fixed housing. A rotating disk is mounted on a shaft which extends through the housing. The support structure allows stock to circulate on both sides of the disk support structure, thus balancing fluid pressures on both sides of the fixed disk and preventing thermal gradients for reduced deflection of the disks. The incoming stock is centrifugally accelerated in a shroud which separates and traps tramp metal or the like before the stock passes to the refiner disks. The shroud has passageways which allow the rotating fluid to enter a reservoir which surrounds the drive shaft and feeds the gaps between the rotor and the stationary plates.
