Particle separation and concentration system

This invention is based on size and mass separation of suspended particles, including biological matter, which are made to flow in a spiral channel. On the spiral sections, the inward directed transverse pressure field from fluid shear competes with the outward directed centrifugal force to allow for separation of particles. At high velocity, centrifugal force dominates and particles move outward. At low velocities, transverse pressure dominates and the particles move inward. The magnitudes of the two opposing forces depend on flow velocity, particle size, radius of curvature of the spiral section, channel dimensions, and viscosity of the fluid. At the end of the spiral channel, a parallel array of outlets collects separated particles. For any particle size, the required channel dimension is determined by estimating the transit time to reach the side-wall. This time is a function of flow velocity, channel width, viscosity, and radius of curvature. Larger particles may reach the channel wall earlier than the smaller particles which need more time to reach the side wall. Thus a spiral channel may be envisioned by placing multiple outlets along the channel. This technique is inherently scalable over a large size range from sub-millimeter down to 1 μm.

Hole puncher and reinforcer

A combination hole punching and reinforcing device for punching holes in sheets of paper and other sheet materials applies flat reinforcement rings about holes formed in those sheets concurrently as the holes are formed. The device employs a die punch, which is preferably configured as a disposable item that is detachable from the lower end of the punching ram. The die punch is configured with a punching tip at its lower extremity and a shank that is preferably narrower than the punching tip. A plurality of reinforcement rings are stacked one atop each other and are carried upon a shoulder formed at the demarcation between the die punch tip and the die punch shank. A transverse pressure plate located atop the shank applies pressure to sequentially affix the lowermost reinforcement ring in the stack to a sheet of paper concurrently with the formation of an aperture through that sheet. Each reinforcement ring is formed with a pressure-sensitive adhesive on its undersurface and an upper surface treated with a silicone release coating. Therefore, once each lowermost reinforcement ring is attached about an aperture formed in a sheet of paper, the remaining reinforcement rings in the stack are lifted by the die punch and detached from the lowermost ring.

Implementations of a polarization control method and apparatus are provided. In one implementation, a device uses super-polished squeezing surfaces to apply pressure against a polyimide coated fiber thereby minimizing micro-bending effects that cause losses in the fiber. Special control circuitry may be used to maintain a driving source of piezo-electrics that control the squeezing surfaces at a resonant frequency, thereby minimizing the voltages needed to drive the piezo-electrics.

The suction and periodic excitation flows may be employed, for example, to effectively control boundary layer separation. A mechanism for automated performance of the method is also disclosed.

Computer control for bio-mechanical alteration of the cornea

A system and method for altering the shape of a lamina of transparent material (e.g. the cornea of an eye), as it is being subjected to a transverse pressure differential, requires a computer controlled laser unit. In accordance with specified input parameters, the computer directs the laser unit to perform LIOB over predetermined surfaces within the lamina. This weakens the material for a desired reshaping of the lamina in response to the pressure differential. With respect to a perpendicular axis that is defined by the lamina, surfaces parallel to the axis (e.g. cylindrical surfaces) are separated from each other by about two hundred microns. For surfaces perpendicular to the axis, the separation is about ten microns. In each instance, the cuts that result from LIOB are only about two microns thick.

Fill parameters such as isovolumetric relaxation constant, ventricular suction pressure, atrial kick pressure, and transvalve pressure gradient are derived from measured pressures representing minimum ventricular pressure, ventricular diastolic pressure, and diastasis pressure.

When the transverse pressure changes, a center wavelength difference of the two beams of reflected light will change so as to change the resonant frequency of a microwave photonic notching filter. A frequency response curve of the filter is measured by the vector network analyzer to obtain the resonance center frequency to realize measurement of the transverse pressure. The fiber bragg grating transverse pressure transducer system of the invention is advantaged by being high in resolution, adjustable in sensitivity and capable of realizing long distance transverse pressure measurement in an electromagnetic interference preventing mode.

A doorstop includes a flange connected to a floor contacting portion. The flange is deflectable under transverse pressure. During operation, a door-engaging end portion of the flange contacts a vertical face of a door. Upon deflection, the end portion drops below the vertical face to allow the door to close.
