An apparatus for improving the performance of flashlights includes a substantially cylindrical housing (10) having a first end (12) and a second end (14). A battery cap (18) is operatively connected to the first end of the housing and functions to secure a series of batteries in place. A series (30) of light emitting diodes (LED) (32-48) are mounted within the flashlight housing at the end opposite the battery cap. The series of LEDs form an LED array which operates as the light source for the flashlight. A substantially cone-shaped optical assembly (50) extends outward from the second end of the housing and operates to focus and disperse the LED beam emitted by the LED array. The flashlight further includes an adjustable switch (56) disposed on the exterior of the housing. The switch is coupled to a variable resistor (58) which permits control over the light level and/or battery life. An electronic current regulator (70), enclosed by the housing, allows the LED beam to remain at a constant and desired light level, thereby increasing the efficiency of the battery life. A dynamic pulse control system (74) is coupled to the switch which takes advantage of the human eye perceiving the pulsed beam to be continuous. The pulse control also increases the peak current through the LED source.

A piezoelectric drive, and the rotor and/or pushers thereof, have long life, e. g. at least about 6000 hours of actual operation. A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprises: a positive electrode sheet comprising a positive electrode mixture containing a lithium-containing transition metal oxide as an active material and a particulate binder; a negative electrode sheet comprising a negative electrode mixture containing a carbon material; a separator interposed between the positive electrode sheet and the negative electrode sheet; and a non-aqueous electrolyte containing a lithium salt, wherein the positive electrode sheet and the negative electrode sheet are wound with the separator interposed therebetween to form an electrode assembly, and the positive electrode mixture has an active material density of 3.0 to 4.0 g/ml. The battery has a long life, high energy density and high output.

The invention is directed to a device for generating flows of gas for filtering the radiation emitted in plasma-based radiation sources. It is the object of the invention to find a novel possibility for generating a gas curtain in the immediate vicinity of a radiating plasma so as to permit a simple arrangement and design and a long life of the device for generating the gas curtain under extreme thermal stress. According to the invention, this object is met in that a slit nozzle is formed of a plurality of partial bodies comprising different materials to form a supersonic nozzle profile for the generation of a broad gas curtain in order to accommodate the slit nozzle to different thermal and precision-mechanical requirements in the gas inlet region and in the gas outlet region.

A lignocellulosic composite material and a method for preparing the lignocellulosic composite material are disclosed. The invention also provides a method for preparing the radiation detector by a combination of a solution method, a Bridgman method and a vapor deposition method.
