Microengineered Supercritical Fluid Chromatography System

This invention describes a microengineered SFC system for rapidly and efficiently separating the constituents of a complex mixture. The SFC system includes a microchannel that is microfabricated from a suitable substrate so that it forms a chromatographic column for separation of chemicals. The surface area of the microchannel of the column is sufficiently small as to permit use of miniature and relatively inexpensive pumps, and the thermal mass of the microengineered column is sufficiently low as to permit rapid temperature cycling using a miniature, low power and inexpensive heating element. At least a portion of this microchannel is packed with suitable sorbent materials or includes surfaces which are suitably coated with sorbent, or both, so as to retain and elute analyte under certain conditions. As a result analyte passing within this microchannel undergoes chromatographic separation.

Infusion Method for Vacuum Fried Fruit Leveraging

A method for infusing fruits and vegetables with prebiotic soluble fibers in the form of either short chain fructooligosaccharides or dextrins. Fruits and vegetables are submerged in an infusion solution of prebiotic soluble fiber, and undergo both atmospheric and vacuum infusion processes. The infusion solution is maintained at a temperature of between about 45° F. to about 50° F. and at a Brix of about 30° to about 60°. Vacuum (low pressure) pulses are applied to the product to expedite solids infusion (mass transfer) and thereby decrease infusion time and the product is subsequently vacuum fried to attain a great-tasting, fiber-enriched and aesthetically-pleasing fruit or vegetable product with reduced sweetness, good texture, and an enhanced natural taste with less than 2% moisture by weight and a significantly long shelf-life of up to 12 months.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing plastic optical transmission medium

The subject invention pertains to a method for high speed, continuous manufacture of graded refractive index polymer optical fiber. The subject fiber material may be organic or perfluorinated. The subject method can include first forming energy activatable prepolymer compositions containing additives. The prepolymer compositions can be extruded at low temperature through a multi-annular die and surrounded by a co-extruded concentric melt stream which forms a tube with good structural integrity. The prepolymer compositions contained in the tube can be maintained at a temperature for a time sufficient to form the desired graded index profile. Energy can be delivered to the prepolymer compositions which can cause an irreversible chemical transformation and forms a mechanically and thermally stable polymer. A continuous process of thermal annealing of the fiber can be used to minimize residual stress. Multiple fibers may be produced simultaneously in a variety of physical configurations.
