In telecommunications, RS-232, Recommended Standard 232 refers to a standard originally introduced in 1960 for serial communication transmission of data. It formally defines signals connecting between a DTE (data terminal equipment) such as a computer terminal, and a DCE (data circuit-terminating equipment or data communication equipment), such as a modem. The standard defines the electrical characteristics and timing of signals, the meaning of signals, and the physical size and pinout of connectors. The current version of the standard is TIA-232-F Interface Between Data Terminal Equipment and Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment Employing Serial Binary Data Interchange, issued in 1997. The RS-232 standard had been commonly used in computer serial ports and is still widely used in industrial communication devices.

A digital sampling playback doorbell system has two or more doorbell buttons and a central unit with solid state memory storage for multiple digitally sampled sound files. User assignment means are provided for assigning a particular sound file to a particular doorbell button. The digital sampling playback doorbell has computer interface of RS-232, or USB, or infrared wireless connection type and relies on computer installed software to download digitally sampled sound files stored in the computer hard drive to the memory of the digital sampling playback doorbell system central unit. The digitally sampled sound files stored in the computer hard drive are obtained by accessing a web site through the Internet or capturing sound through an audio computer connection to a microphone, CD player, radio broadcast or mass music storage device using software resident in the computer. Such sound transfer can take place via a blue tooth communication link, or by a docking station that resides on the doorbell. Taking advantage of the intelligence contained within the IPOD, one can then select sounds or files that have been previously converted by either the IPOD or the computer that the IPOD was previously attached to, and send them to the doorbell.

The invention discloses a false-detection resistant annular coil vehicle detector comprising an oscillating circuit module, a parameter setting module, a frequency measuring module, a central processing module, an RS-232 communication module and the like. The annular coil is connected with the oscillating circuit module of a vehicle detector through a coupling transformer of 1:1 to form a high-frequency oscillating circuit; the frequency measuring module is used for carrying out shaping and frequency division on an oscillating signal and feeding the finally-calculated signal frequency valve to a singlechip control system; a singlechip is used for sampling a measuring value of the frequency measuring module at regular time; the measuring value is subjected to filter processing and is detected by an embedded vehicle detection algorithm; a detection state is displayed by an LED; and the detection result can be output by a pulse manner or transmitted to an upper computer through an RS-232 bus. An Ethernet Digital Storage (EDS) Card and satellite transmission system is provided for receiving, storing, and transmitting files including video, audio, text, and multimedia files, especially files received via satellite transmission. In a preferred embodiment, a satellite system includes a receiver using the EDS Card. A data stream is received by the receiver and then may be stored at the receiver or directly routed as TCP/IP packets. Received or stored data files may be multicast. The EDS Card also includes an HTTP server for web access to the card parameters and any files stored on the card. A DHCP on the EDS card provides dynamic configuration of the card's IP address. The EDS card also includes a PPP and modem processor for file transmission, reception, and affidavit collection. The EDS card also includes an event scheduler for triggering files at a predetermined time or at an external prompt. A command processor keeps a built-in log of audio spots played and responds to a command originator when a command is received. Files may be transmitted from the EDS card via a M&C port, an Ethernet port, or an auxiliary RS-232 port. Files may be received by the EDS Card from a data stream from a satellite, a M&C port, an Ethernet port, or an auxiliary RS-232 port. The EDS card also provides time shifting and may be used without a satellite feed as an HTTP-controlled router with storage.

Optical communication network and method of remotely managing multiplexers

To provide a graphic user interface, supported by HTML or Java script, to a personal computer (102) for the control of SONET / SDH network elements (106), an RS-232 port of a PC is used to establish a PPP session to a remote access server, RAS (122). The network element (106) is therefore configured to imitate a modem, and to route PPP packets into its related management system across an optical ring (12). The management system may include an intermediate network manager (120) and a DHCP server (124). Once legitimacy of the PC is established through the IP session, the PC is provided with an IP address to invoke the PC's IP stack. Subsequently, IP is communicated across the PPP session, with the RAS (120) configured to terminate the PPP session and forward IP packets into an IP network (128). IP packets (131), received at a web server (140), are converted into command line interface (CLI) messages 135 and are sent directly to the network manager (120) within an IP packet. The network manager (120) terminated the IP packet and re-packages the CLI messages into an optical carrier format (140) for relay to an addressed network element (106). The addressed network element (106), which is responsive to the CLI messages from a management perspective, then alters its set-up or functionality accordingly. Complex text-based CLI instructions are thus avoided by a field-based engineer through the use of a GUI supported by a PC having web-browser capabilities, with an typical architecture shown in FIG. 2.
