A beam of electromagnetic radiation is passed through a particle stream made of a test or field aerosol. The single detector outputs an electrical signal proportional to the electromagnetic radiation scattered thereupon. The electrical signal may be conditioned to produce an integrated signal for measuring radiation scattered from all the particles in the interrogation volume, a pulse height from an individual particle within the volume, and/or a time-of-flight measurement from the individual particle. The integrated signal can be correlated to particle mass concentration. The pulse height signal and the time-of-flight signal may be converted to infer the size of the individual particle. Attendant size distributions for the particle sizes may also be obtained. Using known or assumed particle properties, the mass concentration may be estimated from the size distribution.

A method of treating headache is provided using a water soluble magnesium salt. Specifically, a method of treating a headache is provided for an individual having a serum ionized magnesium concentration of 0.44 mmoles/L to 0.53 mmoles/L and having at least one headache symptom by administering an amount of a water soluble magnesium salt sufficaent to inhibit at least one headache symptom in the individual within 24 hours and to raise the serum ionized magnesium concentration in the individual to within a normal ionized magnesium concentration range of 0.54 mmoles/L to 0.67 mmoles/L. Headache symptoms which may be inhibited include: pain, aura, photophobia, nausea, unilateral pain and phonophobia.

A device for use in constructing a breathing circuit has at least a first tube and a filter; the filter has a proximal and a distal end; the first tube is attached to the filter distal end. A second tube can be attached to the filter proximal end, wherein the second tube can be detached from the filter for reuse in a breathing circuit formed with the foregoing components. The filter and the first tube may be disposed of after a single use. The first tube has a length sufficient to maintain the filter at a desired distance from a patient airway device when connected thereto. In a preferred embodiment, a fresh gas outlet is provided at the distal end of the first tube resulting in minimal or substantially no mixing space in the circuit, while the disposable first tube and filter create less medical waste than that created by prior art circuits. Mixing space refers to space distal of the fresh gas outlet into the circuit where the fresh gases can mix with recirculated or other gases. In embodiments, the mixing space is less than 15 cm³ or less than about 5 cm³, and the distal disposable filter and tube device is less than 50 cm in length.

A system and method are disclosed for the detection of water vapor in a natural gas background. The system includes a light source operating in a wavelength range such as, 1.877–1.901 μm, 2.711–2.786 μm, or 920–960 nm, passes through the natural gas to be detected by a detector. In one embodiment, the light source is a tunable diode laser and the moisture level is determined by harmonic spectroscopy. In other embodiments, a VCSEL laser is utilized.

An apparatus for measuring a concentration of a light-absorbing substance in blood is disclosed. A light emitter emits light beams to irradiate a living tissue, each of the light beams being associated with one wavelength which is absorbed by the blood. A first instrument measures first intensities of the light beams, which are to be incident on the living tissue. A second instrument measures second intensities of the light beams, which are transmitted through the living tissue. A first calculator calculates an attenuation variation ratio, which is a ratio of attenuation variations of the respective light beams due to variation of a volume of the blood caused by pulsation, based on the second intensities of the light beams. A modular optical detector system. The detector system is designed to detect the presence of molecules or molecular species by inducing fluorescence with exciting radiation and detecting the emitted fluorescence. A water purification apparatus connected to a water system includes a hopper for holding chemical tablets on a perforated bed and an underlying basin. A spray head is detachably connected to the perforated bed and sprays water onto the tablets and parallel to the perforated bed. The basin receives the water through the perforated bed. Because the hopper allows for the use of different spray head designs, the rate at which water is introduced to the tablets, and thus the chemical output, may be modified by replacing one spray head for another having a different number of spray nozzles or having spray nozzles of a different size or shape. An apparatus and method for adjusting the parameters of a reducing gas stream prior to introduction into a direct reduction furnace, such parameters including temperature of the gas stream, and amount of hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen contained in the reducing gas. This invention provides a concentrator capable of drawing out a concentrate of a constant concentration. The concentrator includes a heater having a heating medium that has been heated to a temperature not less than the boiling point of a solution fed to the concentrator—whereby said heater heats the solution to evaporate the solvent to a vapor to make a mixture of the vapor and a liquid—and a gas-liquid separator for dividing the mixture into the liquid and the vapor. The concentrator provides for returning the liquid separated in the gas-liquid separator to the heater, for drawing out a portion of the liquid separated in the gas-liquid separator, for detecting the concentration of an intended component in the drawn out liquid, and for controlling the liquid draw-out so that when the concentration is above a predetermined threshold, liquid draw-out commences, and when the concentration is below the threshold, liquid draw-out stops.
