An internal memory has an address book table for registering data regarding a communication destination party, a telephone number, and a country flag indicative of a country where the communication destination party is present, in a manner that they are shown corresponding to one another. A calling processor compares a country flag attached to a communication destination party selected using a memory dial function, and information obtained from an RF module regarding a country where the communication circuit can be established. When the flag information and the information from the Rf module coincide, the calling processor determines that the ongoing call is a domestic call, and thus dials the telephone number as registered in the address book table and, when they do not coincide, the calling processor determines that the ongoing call is an international call, and thus dials international access and country codes prior to the telephone number registered in the address book table. Using a portable communication device having the above arrangement, the user can automatically place a call to a party in or out of the country where the user is present even when the destination party information for each communication destination candidate party is registered only in a single formation.

Data transfer mechanism for handheld devices over a wireless communication link

A method and apparatus for transferring data between a handheld device and a network over a wireless communications link. A datapool manager breaks files into virtual blocks and adds the virtual blocks to a datapool. A communications manager converts the virtual blocks into transportation packets and controls the transfer of the transportation packets between the handheld device and the network. After a transportation packet is transferred, an acknowledgment is returned indicating that the transfer was successful. If the transfer of a file is interrupted, then, upon reestablishing the wireless link, only those transportation packets for which an acknowledgment has not been returned are transferred. To properly reconstruct the file, a pointer indicates the location of each transportation packet in the file. Furthermore, to enable the use of a partially transferred file, a table of information is maintained indicating the validity of the partially transferred file. Transportation packets are identified as instruction packets or data packets. When determining the order of transfer, priority is placed on the transfer of instruction packets.

Active search sensor and a method of detection using non-specular reflections

It has been found that target optics produce non-specular, augmented optical returns when interrogated by a laser pulse. This non-specular radiation is detected by an active laser search system employing a direct-reading, thresholded focal plane detector that is able to detect non-cooperating targets with optics that employ a detector or optical element at the focal plane of their receiving optics. The pulses returned from such target optics have a width commensurate with the original transmitted pulse width, whereas passive background noise and the spread out active returns from the ground exhibit temporally long returns. By setting the sensor threshold sufficiently high, the system discriminates against noise and clutter while at the same time reducing the number of sweeps required to detect a target within the search area.

Methods of recovering data in a received signal sent in a communications media are disclosed. Composite channel impulse responses are first estimated. Channel-tap locations are then assigned to suppress the interference noises by sequential search schemes or heuristic search schemes based on estimated composite channel impulse responses. A sequential search scheme optimizes a predetermined design criterion in a sequential manner. Also described are recursive evaluations of the design criterion and the inverses of the noise covariance matrices based on the composite channel impulse response during a sequential search. A heuristic search scheme selects channel-tap locations based on a set of pre-selected channel-tap locations. The set of pre-selected channel-tap locations is determined according to the estimated composite channel impulse response. A method of estimating energy levels of known interference sources is also described.

This invention is a slotted cylindrical rotary valve assembly for an internal combustion engine, comprising of two sets of gear driven slotted cylindrical tubes in a cradle apparatus. Each set has two tubes located co-axially and rotates co-axially, and each tube is slotted to allow for improved transport of a fuel / air mixture and exhaust. In one embodiment, an intake set of tubes transport fuel / air through apertures on the tubes. The exhaust set of tubes transport exhaust through apertures (slots) on the tubes. The rotation of the tubes brings the apertures in timely alignment to allow fuel / air injection and exhaust in synchronization with the cyclical operation of the pistons in the combustion chambers. Effective sealing in one embodiment is achieved by using a modified piston with an extension wall extending longitudinally from the top of the piston to seal intake and exhaust orifices at the top of the chamber.
