Process and Apparatus for Producing Fine Particles

A fine particle producing process introduces a material for producing fine particles into a thermal plasma flame to make a vapor-phase mixture and quenches the vapor-phase mixture to form the fine particles. In the process, the material for producing the fine particles is dispersed or dissolved in a dispersion medium or solvent, preferably containing a combustible material to prepare a dispersion such as a slurry, a colloidal solution or a dissolution solution, the dispersion is made into a form of droplets, or the material for producing the fine particles is dispersed with a carrier gas and a combustible material and the dispersion in a droplet form or the dispersed material is introduced into the thermal plasma flame. In the fine particle producing process and apparatus, a gas of an amount sufficient to quench the vapor-phase mixture is supplied toward a tail of the thermal plasma flame. In the process and apparatus, primary fine particles are introduced into a cyclone to be subjected to cooling and classification and secondary fine particles having a particle size of 100 nm or less which are left upon removal of coarse particles are recovered.

Par² lighting fixture

An improved lighting fixture is disclosed for imaging a high-intensity beam of light at a distant location. A specially-made duel parabolic reflector system cooperates with a gate aperture and a single aspheric lens to produce a beam that incorporates a very high proportion of emitted visible light. Alternatively, said fixture has two lenses in a positioning mechanism mounted in the housing, and includes a rack and pinion gear device that adjusts the distance between the front and rear lenses in response to the rotation of an actuator. The actuator is configured to slide along a slot in the housing, controlling the translation of the first and second lenses with respect to the gate aperture. A shielding baffle covers the slot. The actuator is further configured with a locking mechanism that constrains the actuator from being moved with respect to the housing when the locking mechanism is in position. Additionally the rear parabolic reflector part has a dichroich coating that reflects only a low proportion of infrared light. The projected beam thereby has a relatively low energy density, such that the front portion of the fixture can be reduced substantially in size, be made of light weight materials with lower temperature resistance, and utilize lenses made of plastic. The gate is selectively rotatable relative to the fixture's rear housing.

Battery pack management strategy in a hybrid electric motor vehicle

A software algorithm (FIG. 3) determines the strategy by which a controller (34) will manage state of charge (SOC) of a battery pack (32) in a hybrid electric vehicle but always gives the driver the opportunity to make his / her own selection instead. The algorithm causes one of two strategies to be selected each time that the ignition switch is operated from “off” position to “on” position. The manner in which the algorithm executes depends on the value of a calibratable parameter electronically programmed into the controller of the particular vehicle when the vehicle is being built at the factory.

Cutting tool

A cutting tool for a milling, drilling or turning machine has a body with a plurality of sides and a central opening. Each side has a perimeter along which cutting planes or edges are formed. Each side has at least two such cutting planes or edges. The planes may have a straight or curved profile, or a combination of straight and curved profiles along one side. The tool may have a plurality of such cutting planes formed along each side of the tool body. The cutting planes may be located at different levels in relation to each other, entering a work piece in sequence, or may be aligned to enter the work piece simultaneously. Preferably, the cutting planes are staggered in two directions—in a feeding direction and in a cutting direction. By dividing each surface being cut into a plurality of segments, the cutting tool creates a plurality of distinct shavings, or splinters that have shorter length in comparison with conventional splinters formed by indexable tips. Shorter cuts require less cutting force, which saves wear on the cutting tool and the machine. At the same time, the cuts can be made deeper and smoother when dividing the cutting surface into a plurality of segments.
