68 results about "Sarin" patented technology

Sarin (NATO designation GB [short for G-series, "B"]), is an extremely toxic synthetic organophosphorus compound. A colorless, odorless liquid, it is used as a chemical weapon due to its extreme potency as a nerve agent. Exposure is lethal even at very low concentrations, where death can occur within one to ten minutes after direct inhalation of a lethal dose, due to suffocation from lung muscle paralysis, unless antidotes are quickly administered. People who absorb a non-lethal dose, but do not receive immediate medical treatment, may suffer permanent neurological damage.

Method for detection of gases based on fluorescence enhancement in porphyrin aggregates

A fluorescence-based method for highly sensitive and selective detection of molecules of organic gases such as benzene, alcohol, chloroform, basic vapors including dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) that is a simulant of Sarin, Soman and other chemical warfare agents having basic properties, is proposed. The method employs the effect of strong fluorescence change in thin films of aggregated porphyrins. In one preferred embodiment, the aggregation of porphyrin molecules leads to initial depression of chromophore emission due to self-quenching effect. The binding of analyte molecules to porphyrin sensitive layer forms porphyrin-analyte complexes, which destroy initial aggregate structure and induce the strong fluorescence enhancement. Aggregate-sensing films usually provide higher and faster response than porphyrins isolated in a polymer matrix. That results in strong enhancement of the florescence quantum yield and shift of the fluorescent spectrum in the direction of shorter wavelengths. The method can be used in fluorescence chemical sensors of organic gases for different applications including environmental monitoring, control of industrial processes and medicine.

Molecularly-imprinted photonic crystal for detecting organophosphorus toxicants

The invention discloses a novel sensor, and specifically discloses a molecularly-imprinted photonic crystal (MIPC) which is used for detecting organophosphorus toxicants timely and quickly. The MIPC employs methylphosphonic acid and ethylphosphonic acid as imprinting templates. An intensity of a reflectance spectrum of the corresponding imprinted photonic crystal decreases significantly with the increase of the concentration of a target compound or with the absorption time. The MIPC also shows some practical application values, and shows effects of low detection limit and high sensitivity in detections for the organophosphorus toxicants such as sarin, soman, VX and R-VX prototypes.

Fluorescence-based method for detecting of basic gases

A fluorescence-based method for highly sensitive and selective detection of molecules of basic gases, such as dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), Sarin, Soman and other chemical warfare agents, is proposed. The method employs the effect of strong fluorescence change in a solvatochromic dye isolated in a matrix of the hydrogen bond acidic polymer. In one preferred embodiment the dye and polymer matrix are chosen such that the hydrogen-bond interaction between them results in depression of the fluorescence yield of the sensitive material prior its interaction with the molecules of basic gases. The interaction between the molecule of basic gases and the acidic polymer matrix breaks the hydrogen bond of the dye with the polymer matrix "releasing" the dye and returning it back into the state with a low solute-solvent interaction. That results in strong enhancement of the dye florescence quantum yield and shift of the dye fluorescent spectrum in the direction of shorter wavelengths. The method can be used in fluorescence chemical sensors of basic gases for different applications including environmental monitoring, control of industrial processes and medicine.

Method of signal amplification in multi-chromophore luminescence sensors

A fluorescence-based method for highly sensitive and selective detection of analyte molecules is proposed. The method employs the energy transfer between two or more fluorescent chromophores in a carefully selected polymer matrix. In one preferred embodiment, signal amplification has been achieved in the fluorescent sensing of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) using two dyes, 3-aminofluoranthene (AM) and Nile Red (NR), in a hydrogen bond acidic polymer matrix. The selected polymer matrix quenches the fluorescence of both dyes and shifts dye emission and absorption spectra relative to more inert matrices. Upon DMMP sorption, the AM fluorescence shifts to the red at the same time the NR absorption shifts to the blue, resulting in better band overlap and increased energy transfer between chromophores. In another preferred embodiment, the sensitive material is incorporated into an optical fiber system enabling efficient excitation of the dye and collecting the fluorescent signal form the sensitive material on the remote end of the system. The proposed method can be applied to multichromophore luminescence sensor systems incorporating N-chromophores leading to N-fold signal amplification and improved selectivity. The method can be used in all applications where highly sensitive detection of basic gases, such as dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), Sarin, Soman and other chemical warfare agents having basic properties, is required, including environmental monitoring, chemical industry and medicine.

Potential gradient amplified detection of chemical agents

New approaches for selective detection of chemical agents such as sarin are necessary because of the high toxicity of sarin and related compounds, the potential of these compounds to be used as weapons of mass destruction, and the limitations of current detection methodologies. Herein is described an apparatus and a method for selective and amplified detection of sarin simulants deposited via an aerosol process. The simulant absorbs into a hydrogel, where it hydrolyzes upon contact with water producing elemental ions. The elemental ions are then concentrated via an ionic chemical potential gradient to a sensor, where it is detected. This technique has potential to amplify the capture efficiency of a sensor by a 1000-fold within couple of minutes.
