The present invention discloses a hindered amine with characteristics of high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution, and a preparation method thereof. According to the process, a polymerizable hindered amine, a free radical initiator and an RAFT chain transfer agent are added to a solvent, a reaction is performed for 4-48 h at a temperature of 60-85 DEG C under nitrogen protection, a rapid quenching treatment is performed with liquid nitrogen or ice water, a precipitation treatment is performed with a precipitant, and then suction filtration, water washing and drying are performed to obtain the hindered amine with characteristics of high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution, wherein the molecular weight is 1100-30000, and the molecular weight distribution is less than 2.5. According to the present invention, the prepared hindered amine can be adopted as the light stabilizer, the physical loss of the small molecular weight hindered amine light stabilizer during the processing process can be reduced, and the migration volatilization of the hindered amine light stabilizer during the use process can be effectively prevented, such that the light stabilizing effect can be lasting and effective for a long time; and the preparation method of the present invention has characteristics of simple process, low equipment requirement, stable reaction, simple operation, no by-product production, minimal catalyst consumption, cleaning and environmental protection.
