Method and apparatus for measuring distance and direction by movable magnetic field source

Methods for determining the distance from a borehole to a nearby, substantially parallel target well for use in guiding the drilling of the borehole, including positioning a magnetic field sensor in the borehole at a known depth and providing a magnetic field source in the target well. The wells may be vertical or horizontal, and the source preferably is a solenoid movable in the target to a location at approximately the same depth as that of the sensor. The distance between the borehole and the solenoid is determined, in one embodiment, by moving the solenoid to depths above and below the depth of the sensor, and detecting maximum field vectors. The distance the solenoid moves between the maxima is the distance between the wells. In another embodiment, the ratio of solenoid magnetic field vectors is used to determine the ratio of the difference in depth z between the solenoid and the sensor to the lateral distance R between the wells. This ratio z / r is then used to determine the separation of the wells.

Integrated microchip incorporating atomic magnetometer and microfluidic channel for NMR and MRI

An integral microfluidic device includes an alkali vapor cell and microfluidic channel, which can be used to detect magnetism for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Small magnetic fields in the vicinity of the vapor cell can be measured by optically polarizing and probing the spin precession in the small magnetic field. This can then be used to detect the magnetic field of in encoded analyte in the adjacent microfluidic channel. The magnetism in the microfluidic channel can be modulated by applying an appropriate series of radio or audio frequency pulses upstream from the microfluidic chip (the remote detection modality) to yield a sensitive means of detecting NMR and MRI.

Microwave-based examination using hypothesis testing

Microwave examination of individuals is carried out by transmitting microwave signals from multiple antenna locations into an individual and receiving the backscattered microwave signals at multiple antenna locations to provide received signals from the antennas. The received signals are processed to remove the skin interface reflection component of the signal and the corrected signal data are provided to a hypothesis testing process. In hypothesis testing for detecting tumors, image data are formed from the test statistic used to perform a binary hypothesis test at each voxel. The null hypothesis asserts that no tumor is present at a candidate voxel location. The voxel threshold is determined by specifying a false discovery rate to control the expected proportion of false positives in the image. When the test statistic value associated with a voxel is greater than the threshold, the null hypothesis is rejected and the test statistic is assigned to the voxel. For voxels where the test statistic falls below the threshold, the null hypothesis is accepted and the voxel value is set to zero. The resulting image indicates the locations or other characteristics of detected tumors.

Current-perpendicular-to-the-plane structure magnetoresistive element and head slider

A magnetoresistive film is interposed between domain controlling films in a current-perpendicular-to-the-plane (CPP) structure magnetoresistive element. The domain controlling films designed to establish a first biasing magnetic field of a first intensity across the magnetoresistive film along the front end of the magnetoresistive film and a second biasing magnetic field of a second intensity larger than the first intensity along the rear end of the magnetoresistive film. The second biasing magnetic field serves to establish a single domain property within the magnetoresistive film along the rear end. Although the first biasing magnetic field acts in the same direction as the current field at a position near the front end of the magnetoresistive film, the magnetization is allowed to reliably rotate near the front end. A sensing current having a larger current value can be supplied to the magnetoresistive film. The magnetoresistive film exhibits a sufficient sensitivity.
