Methods and compositions for the tandem synthesis of two or more oligonucleotides on the same solid support

The present invention relates to novel methods and novel solid support materials for the tandem synthesis of two or more different oligonucleotides on the same solid support in one synthetic run. The methods involve novel support preparations comprised of two or more types of orthogonally protected anchor groups. Subsequent to the selective removal of the first of the respective protective groups, the first oligonucleotide is assembled on the deblocked anchor groups according to standard methods, preferably via phosphoramidite chemistry. Following the capping of said first oligonucleotide, the anchor groups blocked by the second type of protective group are selectively liberated and serve is the starting point for the assembly of a second oligonucleotide, and so forth. After completion of all of the syntheses on the solid support, the oligonucleotides are released from the solid support and deprotected at the nucleobases, using standard methods. Preparations obtained using the method of this invention, generally contain two or more different oligonucleotides. Such preparations are particularly useful in applications that require pairs of oligonucleotide primers, several probes at a time, duplexed nucleic acid fragments, or other combinations of oligonucleotides that are useful in applications such as PCR, sequencing, multiplexed genotyping, cloning and RNA interference. The invention includes procedures for the preparation of the novel solid supports of the invention.

Pentagonal helical antenna array

A pentagonal antenna array having a high aperture efficiency and a suitably high overall gain and low antenna noise temperature. The high aperture efficiency of this antenna system provides an overall system capacity suitable for broadband communication services. The antenna. array consists of five antenna elements each located at a separate vertex of a pentagon. The antenna elements are helical antennas to provide a narrow antenna beam width. The antenna array itself is supported on a base platter which may be steered to point at a satellite using conventional gimbal ring apparatus. The base platter is a planar reflector to reflect the antenna element radiation in the rear direction and thereby reduce the antenna backlobe levels. The input power and the signal transmitted are fed through a phasing / combining network. The phasing / combining network appropriately divides the signal and the input power and phases the signal, prior to feeding the signal to each of the five antenna elements.

Optical guided vacuum assisted biopsy device

An interventional device, e.g. a Vacuum Assisted Biopsy (VAB) needle, incorporating optical fibers such that biological tissue in a volume at a side of the interventional device can be substantially completely optically probed by optical spectroscopy. In a VAB embodiment, a plurality of optical fiber pairs connected to respective optical ports, are placed at opposite positions along the suction cavity, and they are readout subsequently allowing to make a map of the tissue properties along the place where the tissue will be cut by the VAB needle. Based on decision software in an optical console, it can be determined whether the tissue present in the cutting cavity is completely normal tissue or not, prior to actually performing the biopsy on the tissue. In this way a well defined end point for VAB is created. In one embodiment, the optical fibers are arranged in a wall structure of a thin sleeve which fits onto existing VAB needles, thus allowing the VAB needle to be upgraded with an optical probing capability.
