A lightweight, high-strength proppant is disclosed, comprising the formation of finely dispersed ceramic precursors and sintering at low temperatures, causing the formation and retention of mesopores and micropores in pelletized ceramic. A method of manufacturing such a proppant is also disclosed, comprising the steps of manufacturing finely divided ceramic precursors and additives using grinding, milling, and preferably sol-gel processes, and dispersing the finely divided ceramic precursors and additives in a liquid, preferably water. The dispersion has a viscosity profile, which permits the shaping of spheres using conventional pelletizing techniques. Drying of the pellets and sintering at temperatures below 1,400.degrees. C. forms and retains mesopores and micropores in the ceramic. Preferred total pore volumes range from 0.05 to 0.7 cm.sup.3/g. The pelletized and porous ceramic is useful as lightweight and high-strength proppants.

A method of producing a nano-sized crystalline calcium phosphate powder or coating is also described. The method comprises formation of a liquid crystalline phase in a water solution of calcium, phosphor and a surfactant, placing the phase in an ammonia atmosphere so that nano-sized crystals are formed, followed by either removal of the surfactant with a solvent and recovering the nano-sized crystals to obtain the powder, or diluting the ammonia-treated liquid crystalline phase with a hydrophobic organic solvent to create a microemulsion of the nano-sized crystals in water, dipping an oxide layer-coated surface of an object into the microemulsion, or alternatively saving the step of ammonia treatment of the liquid crystalline phase until after the dipping of the surface of an object into the microemulsion, followed by removal of the organic solvent and the surfactant from the surface to obtain the coating.

The present invention relates to novel methods and novel solid support materials for the tandem synthesis of two or more different oligonucleotides on the same solid support in one synthetic run. The methods involve novel support preparations comprised of two or more types of orthogonally protected anchor groups. Subsequent to the selective removal of the first of the respective protective groups, the first oligonucleotide is assembled on the deblocked anchor groups according to standard methods, preferably via phosphoramidite chemistry. Following the capping of said first oligonucleotide, the anchor groups blocked by the second type of protective group are selectively liberated and serve is the starting point for the assembly of a second oligonucleotide, and so forth. After completion of all of the syntheses on the solid support, the oligonucleotides are released from the solid support and deprotected at the nucleobases, using standard methods. Preparations obtained using the method of this invention, generally contain two or more different oligonucleotides. An apparatus and related methods using photographic imaging and the interactions between light beams and dairy milk to provide in-line monitoring, analysis, and display of the quality of milk collected from dairy animals. The apparatus is robust in that it is reliable, simple to install, relatively small in size, cost effective, easily cleaned, and low maintenance. The apparatus can be installed directly in-line with the milk collection apparatus for each animal so as to measure the entire milk yield produced by that animal at flow rates typically used in milking parlours without requiring any unusual tube fittings or non-standard equipment. The apparatus is capable of handling analysis of a flow having mixed densities, air/liquid ratios, temperature variations, or any other similar variation of physical characteristics.

An algorithmic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) includes a sample-and-hold circuit and an ADC processing unit operating in parallel and sharing a single operational amplifier. The ADC processing unit includes an MDAC with a switched capacitor topology and a sub-ADC. The ADC processing unit is clocked by an internal clock that is N times faster than the sample-and-hold clock. Each cycle is further sub-divided into two phases. During one phase the capacitors are coupled to a residue or sampled voltage provided by the MDAC, and during another phase the capacitor are coupled to a reference voltage determined by the switch control signals generated by the sub-ADC. A set of data bits is generated by the ADC processing unit during each ADC clock cycle. The N sets of data bits are added to generate the digital output stream.

The invention relates to a dispenser bottle for a liquid aqueous washing composition which consists of at least two, preferably exactly two, part-compositions kept separate from one another. The dispenser bottle has a first receiving vessel (1) and at least one, preferably exactly one, second receiving vessel (2) and the first receiving vessel (1) contains a first part-composition and the second receiving vessel (2) a second part-composition. The two receiving vessels (1, 2) are either designed separately or connected to one another or designed together in one piece, The receiving vessels (1, 2) each have an outlet (3, 4) for the part-composition. An interventional device, e.g. a Vacuum Assisted Biopsy (VAB) needle, incorporating optical fibers such that biological tissue in a volume at a side of the interventional device can be substantially completely optically probed by optical spectroscopy. In a VAB embodiment, a plurality of optical fiber pairs connected to respective optical ports, are placed at opposite positions along the suction cavity, and they are readout subsequently allowing to make a map of the tissue properties along the place where the tissue will be cut by the VAB needle. A medical valve device for use in selectively establishing a fluid flow between first and second medical implements is disclosed. The valve has a body defining a passage from a first port to a second port. The valve defines a first fluid volume when both medical implements are connected thereto, and a second, smaller volume when one of the implements is disconnected, thereby causing a positive flow of fluid from the valve to the second medical implement when the first implement is disconnected.

Dispersion polyols which are liquid-liquid dispersions containing a first polyol having a substantially polyoxypropylene internal block having an equivalent weight in excess of about 700 Da and a high oxyethylene-content external block, and a second polyol which is a substantially polyoxyethylene polyol containing minimally 50 weight percent oxyethylene moieties. The dispersion polyols are stable and exhibit broad processing latitude when preparing hypersoft polyurethane foams. A turbomachine arranged with a rotor and a stator, including radial positioning means ensuring that the rotor is radially position; and a contactless axial balancing device arranged on at least one bladed wheel for axially balancing the rotor at high speed. The turbomachine includes a thrust bearing distinct from the radial positioning means serving to balance the rotor axially at low speed, and without contact at high speed.
