A frequency meter is an instrument that displays the frequency of a periodic electrical signal. Various types of frequency meters are used. Many are instruments of the deflection type, ordinarily used for measuring low frequencies but capable of being used for frequencies as high as 900 Hz. These operate by balancing two opposing forces. Changes in the frequency to be measured cause a change in this balance that can be measured by the deflection of a pointer on a scale. After adjusting the automatic gain control at least a second and a third symbol of the data unit are received, and in response thereto (1) a first energy of at least one of the second and third symbols is calculated, (2) a first frequency offset of at least one of the second and third symbols is calculated, and (3) a first temporal offset of at least one of the second and third symbols is calculated. The automatic gain control in response receiving a fourth symbol of the data unit from a second antenna is received. After adjusting the automatic gain control at least a fifth and a sixth symbol of the data unit is calculated, and in response thereto (1) a second energy of at least one of the fifth and sixth symbols is calculated, (2) a second frequency offset of at least one of the fifth and sixth symbols is calculated, and (3) a second temporal offset of at least one of the fifth and sixth symbols is calculated. At least one of the first and second antenna is selected based upon a comparison between the first and second energy. In this manner, antenna diversity selection may be performed within a limited duration of available symbols.
