Method of making carbon nanotube arrays, and thermal interfaces using same

Thermal interfaces and methods include an array of carbon nanotubes aligned substantively perpendicularly from a substrate. One method includes arranging metal catalyst particles with a particular ligand on a fluid surface of a Langmuir-Blodgett trough. This forms uniformly spaced particles with spacing based on the particular ligand. The uniformly spaced metal catalyst particles are deposited on a substrate and carbon nanotubes are grown on the particles using chemical vapor deposition. A highly efficient thermal interface can be produced with a carbon nanotube packing ratio greater than fifty percent and used in a thermal switch or other device. In some methods, commercially available nanotubes are condensed on a substrate using carbon nanotubes with terminal carboxylic acids in solution and an amine monolayer on the substrate. Pretreatment of the nanotubes in a switch by applying heavy pressure between two surfaces results in good thermal conductivity between those surfaces at smaller operating pressures.

In situ process to recover heavy oil and bitumen

An in situ reservoir recovery process consisting of a horizontal injection well and a horizontal production well to extract bitumen or heavy oil from a reservoir. The process consists of a first phase operated at high-pressure in which steam, hydrocarbon solvent and non-condensable gases are injected into the reservoir and a second phase in which the injected fluids are transitioned to a high content of solvent and non-condensable gas and a reduced amount of steam to maintain a warm zone in the neighbourhood of the injection and production wells. The steam injection is sufficient to promote vapor transport of the solvent into the vapor depletion chamber and maintain the process at elevated temperatures in order to maintain low fluid viscosities in the production wellbore and to achieve preferred phase behaviour of the solvent hydrocarbon and the heavy oil or bitumen. The operating pressure of the process is controlled to prevent losses of the solvent hydrocarbon to the formation and to aid in solvent production to the production well in order for future re-cycling.

An adjustable length joint for high-pressure applications is described that includes rigid inner and outer tubes; both having passages there through. The rigid outer tube has at least one peripheral ring groove within its inner wall. The tubes have threads, which are adapted to adjustably engage with one another securely at a working pressure of at least about 10,000 psi. The rigid inner tube and the rigid outer tube are rotatable to enable adjustable engagement between the threads. The joint also includes an O-ring seated in each of the at least one peripheral ring grooves. When the rigid inner tube and the rigid outer tube are held in a selectable position, the first thread and the second thread overlap a sufficient distance necessary for the first thread and the second thread to withstand the forces exerted by the internal pressure within the joint at the working pressure.

Method of operating a linear ion trap to provide low pressure short time high amplitude excitation with pulsed pressure

Methods for fragmenting ions in an ion trap are described. These methods involve a) selecting parent ions for fragmentation; b) retaining the parent ions within the ion trap for a retention time interval, the ion trap having an operating pressure of less than about 1×10-4 Torr; c) providing a RF trapping voltage to the ion trap to provide a Mathieu stability parameter q at an excitement level during an excitement time interval within the retention time interval; d) providing a resonant excitation voltage to the ion trap during the excitement time interval to excite and fragment the parent ions; e) providing a non-steady-state pressure increase of at least 10% of the operating pressure within the ion trap by delivering a neutral gas into the ion trap for at least a portion of the retention time interval to raise the pressure in the ion trap to a varying first elevated-pressure in the range between about 6×10-5 Torr to about 5×10-4 Torr for a first elevated-pressure duration; and f within the retention time interval and after the excitement time interval, terminating the resonant excitation voltage and changing the RF trapping voltage applied to the ion trap to reduce the Mathieu stability parameter q to a hold level less than the excitement level to retain fragments of the parent ions within the ion trap. The excitation time interval and the first elevated-pressure duration substantially overlap in time.

A pilot operated pressure valve which limits the rate of start-up pressure rise ("soft start-up") and substantially eliminates excessive system pressure spikes. The valve includes an inlet, a hollow cylindrical main body sealingly connected at one end thereof to the inlet, a pilot chamber having a sleeve slidably mounted within the main body and an operating pressure adjustment connected to another end of the main body adjacent another end of the pilot chamber for varying the threshold operating pressure of the valve. The hydraulic control system comprises a hydraulic pump, a hydraulic motor, a speed reducer, a drum, a brake oil cylinder, a stopper oil cylinder, a control valve set, an auxiliary element and a pipeline. In a hydraulic winch system, an adjustable pressure overflow valve is embedded; the working pressure of the overflow valve can be set according to change of sea conditions; and the pressure acted on the hydraulic motor is limited, so that a cable is always located in a proper tensioning state, and the wave compensation capacity is achieved. The hydraulic control system can largely reduce the change of tension in the cable to adapt to different wave requirements, can be used for normal operation, can realize control of constant tension, guarantees stable and safe load collection and release operation, and can effectively improve the operation capacity of the whole winch under complex ocean environment.
