Organic positive temperature coefficient thermistor and manufacturing method therefor

An organic positive temperature coefficient thermistor comprising a thermoplastic polymer matrix, a low-molecular organic compound having a melting point that is equal to or greater than 40 DEG C. and less than 100 DEG C. and conductive particles, each having spiky protuberances, is obtained by crosslinking a milled mixture of these components with a silane coupling agent comprising a vinyl group or a (meth)acryloyl group and an alkoxy group. This organic positive temperature coefficient thermistor has sufficiently low resistance at room temperature and a large rate of resistance change between an operating state and a non-operating state, and can be operated at less than 100 DEG C. with a reduced temperature vs. resistance curve hysteresis, ease of control of operating temperature, and high performance stability.

Compact direct methanol fuel cell

A compact, lightweight direct methanol fuel cell unit includes a circular membrane electrode assembly (MEA) having a cathode, a proton exchange membrane (PEM), and an anode, an air flow duct on the cathode side of the MEA, an annular fuel reservoir on the anode side of the MEA which contains a mixture of methanol and water as fuel, a carbon dioxide (CO.sub.2) relief valve communicating with the fuel reservoir, and a control unit. Due to the CO.sub.2 release mechanism, the fuel cell is completely self-sustaining without the need for a mechanical auxiliary system. Additionally, the control unit improves the stability of the fuel cell power output and the catalysis activity of the MEA. Another embodiment of the present invention is a direct methanol fuel cell system which incorporates a number of MEAs and a fuel cell reservoir. All the cathodic electrical terminals of the MEAs are serially connected together while they are electronically communicating with the control unit. The anodic electrical terminals similarly communicate electronically with the control unit. Higher power and voltage are thus attained while maintaining a compact size of the fuel cell system.

InactiveUS20170016867A1Outstanding mechanical flexibilityOutstanding durabilityMaterial nanotechnologyNanosensorsPolyethylene terephthalate glycolPolyethylene terephthalate
A flexible nitrogen dioxide sensor based on tungsten trioxide nanoparticles-loaded multi-walled carbon nanotubes-reduced graphene oxide (WO3 NPs-loaded MWCNTs-RGO) hybrid on a polyimide / polyethylene terephthalate substrate. A viscous gel of the hybrid materials can be prepared by the assistance of α-terpineol. The fabricated sensor shows excellent sensing performance toward NO2 which may have a maximum response of 17% (to 5 ppm), a limit of detection of 1 ppm, and relatively short response / recovery time (7 / 15 min). The sensor may exhibit excellent mechanical flexibility and sensing properties at room temperature without any significant performance degradation even at a curvature angle of 90° and after 106 times of bending / relaxing processes. Low cost, light weight and mechanical robustness of the proposed WO3 NPs-MWCNTs-RGO hybrid based sensor can be a promising element for the development of flexible NO2 gas sensors having higher performance.

Tall V/STOL aircraft

A vertical or short takeoff and landing (V / STOL) airplane is described having a vertical form factor. Making the airplane tall has many advantages when operating in hover mode close to the ground. Several variations of the design are described. The preferred embodiment consists of two tall fuselage2 structures having an airfoil shape in plan view. As high above the ground as practical a “lift wing” spans the space between these fuselages. This wing may be equipped with lift augmentation systems to facilitate V / STOL flight. In the center of the span on the leading edge of the lift wing is placed a turboprop engine. Alternatively, the wing and attached engine can be made to tilt about a horizontal axis. For takeoff the wing will be tilted skyward. A second wing slightly below and behind the lift wing has a pusher engine located on the trailing edge. This lower wing and engine is also able to tilt about a horizontal axis parallel to the lift wing. During takeoff this lower engine is pointed downward toward the ground. This lower wing contains aerodynamic control surfaces to provide attitude and position control. Subsequent to liftoff the wings and engines tilt into a horizontal position to provide cruise lift and thrust. At the end of the flight the wings and attached engines are tilted back to provide vertical lift for hover, maneuvering, and soft landing. 2 “Fuselage” is used here even though it substantially differs from the conventional fuselage (and its French origins meaning, “spindle shaped”) since in plan view it is an airfoil shape of large thickness. It will be used here for lack of a better word. Think of fuselage as meaning “where the pilot, passengers and cargo are located”.

Bulk metallic glass nanowires for use in energy conversion and storage devices

A class of materials has advantageous utility in electrocatalytic applications, e.g., fuel cells. The materials circumvent conventional Pt-based anode poisoning and the agglomeration / dissolution of supported catalysts during long-term operation by exploiting the unique physical and chemical properties of bulk metallic glass to create nanowires for electrocatalytic applications, e.g., fuel cell and battery applications. These amorphous metals can achieve unusual geometries and shapes along multiple length scales. The absence of crystallites, grain boundaries and dislocations in the amorphous structure of bulk metallic glasses results in a homogeneous and isotropic material down to the atomic scale, which displays very high strength, hardness, elastic strain limit and corrosion resistance. The melting temperatures of the disclosed bulk metallic glasses are much lower than the estimated melting temperatures based on interpolation of the alloy constituents making them attractive as highly malleable materials.
