The present invention discloses a modified ethylene propylene diene monomer and a preparation method thereof, wherein an ethylene propylene diene monomer is subjected to grafting modification with Nadic anhydride having a structure represented by a formula (1) to prepare the modified ethylene propylene diene monomer, and the grafting rate of the modified ethylene propylene diene monomer is 0.4-3.5 wt% by adopting the weight of the modified ethylene propylene diene monomer as the reference. The preparation method comprises that under an olefin ring-opening cross-metathesis reaction condition, in the presence of a catalyst having a structure represented by a formula (2), an ethylene propylene diene monomer contacts Nadic anhydride in an organic solvent. According to the present invention, the preparation method has advantages of high grafting rate, quick reaction, simple steps, and easy performing; and compared to the unmodified ethylene propylene diene monomer, the modified ethylene propylene diene monomer of the present invention has the following advantages that the unsaturation is 0.44-0.68 mol / kg, and the vulcanization rate is increased to a certain degree.
