Free expansion is an irreversible process in which a gas expands into an insulated evacuated chamber. It is also called Joule expansion. Real gases experience a temperature change during free expansion. For an ideal gas, the temperature doesn't change, and the conditions before and after adiabatic free expansion satisfy , where p is the pressure, V is the volume, and i and f refer to the initial and final states. Since the gas expands, Vf > Vᵢ, which implies that the pressure does drop. During free expansion, no work is done by the gas. The gas goes through states of no thermodynamic equilibrium before reaching its final state, which implies that one cannot define thermodynamic parameters as values of the gas as a whole. For example, the pressure changes locally from point to point, and the volume occupied by the gas is not a well defined quantity. A free expansion is typically achieved by opening a stopcock that allows the gas to expand into a vacuum. Although it would be difficult to achieve in reality, it is instructive to imagine a free expansion caused by moving a piston faster than virtually any atom. No work is done because there is no pressure on the piston.

Thehybrid derivative-free expansion Kalman filter-based USBL/SINS tight combined navigation positioning method involves a USBL acoustic positioning system and an SINS, and combined navigation is performed by a hybrid derivative-free expansion Kalman filter (HDEKF). The method comprises the steps of firstly, obtaining a slope distance measurement value between a transponder and a hydrophone by the USBL system through calculating one-way propagation time of an ultrasonic wave signal between the transponder and the hydrophone, and obtaining an observation equation by a coordinate conversion formula; secondly, building an error state equation according to an error transfer formula of the SINS; and finally, performing hybrid derivative-free expansion Kalman filtering, performing time updating bya standard linear Kalman filter, and performing measurement updating by a derivative-free expansion filter. By the method, the navigation accuracy and the stability of the USBL/INS combined navigationsystem can be effectively improved, and the real-time calculation quantity is reduced.

Annular combustion chamber for a gas turbine

An annular combustion chamber for a gas turbine is disclosed, which permits a sealed air cooling, such that high powers and efficiencies can be achieved with low NOx emissions. The two-piece annular combustion chamber housing surrounds a thin-walled sealed liner, which guides the hot gas escaping from the burners to the turbine inlet in a gas-tight manner. A variable annular chamber is located between the liner and the annular combustion chamber housing, in which the cooling air is collected as a counter-current to the hot gas and fed to the burners (closed air cooling). The surfaces of the liner are variably cooled with efficient baffle cooling devices and drilled patterns in. The thermally-elastic liner constructed from submerged arc-welded rings is axially fixed at the flange only and for the remainder provided with reinforcing circumferential beading. The freely expanding liner is otherwise concentrically fixed to the cold annular combustion chamber housing by means of elastic tensioning elements. The above efficient, economical and simple construction further offers significant service advantages due to the following construction features: the burners can be completely (dis)assembled from outside without opening the housing. Both the liner and also a ring which integrates the first row of turbine guide vanes in the annular combustion chamber can be removed as service pieces in other words exchanged without opening the turbine and compressor housing and without removal of a rotor.
