LAYERED COMPOSITE MATERIALS HAVING THE COMPOSITION: (1-x-y)LiNiO2(xLi2Mn03)(yLiCoO2), AND SURFACE COATINGS THEREFOR

A straightforward and scalable solid-state synthesis at 975° C. used to generate cathode materials in the system Li(3+x)3Ni(1-x-y)CoyMn2x/3O2 {a combination of LiNiO2, Li2MnO3, and LiCoO2 as (1-x-y)LiNiO2.xLi2MnO3.yLiCoO2} is described. Coatings for improving the characteristics of the cathode material are also described. A ternary composition diagram was used to select sample points, and compositions for testing were initially chosen in an arrangement conducive to mathematical modeling. X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization showed the formation of an α-NaFeO2 structure, except in the region of compositions close to LiNiO2. Electrochemical testing revealed a wide range of electrochemical capacities with the highest capacities found in a region of high Li2MnO3 content. The highest capacity composition identified was Li1.222Mn0.444Ni0.167Co0.167O2 with a maximum initial discharge capacity of in the voltage range 4.6-2.0 V. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) testing on this material was promising as it showed an exothermic reaction of 0.2 W/g at 200° C. when tested up to 400° C. Cost for laboratory quantities of material yielded $1.49/Ah, which is significantly lower than the cost of LiCoO2 due to the low cobalt content, and the straightforward synthesis. Li1.222Mn0.444Ni0.167Co0.167O2 is thought to be near optimum composition for the specified synthesis conditions, and shows excellent capacity and safety characteristics while leaving room for optimization in composition, synthesis conditions, and surface treatment.

A stage-by-stage filling theory is used; materials with the lower stage of particle diameter D1 are filled into maximum-nominal-size NMAS; by measuring the internal frictional angle phi of aggregates at different proportions, the proportion corresponding to the maximum internal frictional angle is used as an optimum composition proportion for forming the mineral stable framework; by such analogy, the optimum composition proportion relationship of each grade of coarse aggregates in the asphalt mixture can be obtained, so that a stable coarse aggregate framework structure is formed. Then, a bailey method is used for designing the fine aggregate and filling material proportion; the mineral aggregate gradation designed by the method provided by the invention realizes shearing resistance and compactness. In the step of forming a piezoelectric layer of the method for manufacturing a piezoelectric actuator, the piezoelectric layer is formed by using material particles M having a composition which differs from the optimum composition by the diffusion amount of Ti. The piezoelectric layer has a two-layer structure including a first piezoelectric layer formed on a vibration plate and a second piezoelectric layer laminated on the first piezoelectric layer. Only the first piezoelectric layer has a composition different from the optimum composition, and the second piezoelectric layer laminated thereupon has the optimum composition. When the piezoelectric layer of such a two-layer structure is subjected to the annealing treatment, the composition of the first piezoelectric layer is corrected and becomes the optimum composition by the diffusion of a diffusion element. On the other hand, because the diffusion does not advance to the second piezoelectric layer which is on the farther side from the vibration plate, the optimum composition of the second piezoelectric layer is maintained. As a result, good piezoelectric characteristic can be obtained.

The invention relates to methods and instruments for the rapid detection and rapid mass spectrometric identification of microbial infective agents in blood or other body fluids. The invention recognizes that blood is not a good environment for the cultivation of microbes and provides a method which (a) largely destroys or dissolves the human particles in body fluids, such as erythrocytes and leukocytes in blood, without impairing the ability of the microbes to reproduce, (b) separates the microbial pathogens from the fluid, (c) cultivates them in a nutrient broth which contains none of the antimicrobial components of the body fluids, (d) separates them from the nutrient broth, and (e) identifies the microbes by a mass spectrum of the microbial proteins. The dissolution of the human particles also releases the microbes nesting in macrophages. The cultivation in an optically clear nutrient broth with optimum composition not only accelerates the propagation of the microbes compared to all other cultivation methods, but also makes it possible to continuously measure their quantitative growth starting from a low microbe density. This firstly allows the mass spectrometric identification to be carried out at the earliest possible time, secondly provides a positive detection of microbes far ahead of their identification, which can be lifesaving for the patient; and thirdly makes it possible to start the determination of resistances early.
