When the watermark information is embedded, the block discrete cosine transform (DCT) is carried out on the images, and according to the length of the watermark information, the images are divided, and the watermark information is embedded in each area, and the characteristic identifiers are arranged in the embedded areas, and finally, the fragile watermarks are embedded in the image data. When the images are detected, whether the data contains the fragile watermarks is detected to determine whether the images are tampered. By searching the characteristic identifiers, the areas containing the watermarks are positioned rapidly, thereby extracting the watermark information efficiently. The protection method of the present invention enables the tamper-proofing capability of the images to be improved and the data security to be enhanced. Moreover, the time-space information can be combined with the digital image data itself tightly, thereby providing the technical means for the accurate positioning and the effective authentication of the images.
