A system and method are provided for exchanging heat in fuel cell systems (100) in which the anode and cathode off-gases are provided with separated flow paths. In one embodiment, where a fuel cell stack (110) has separate anode and cathode off-gas flow paths, separate anode off-gas from the at least one fuel cell stack (110) and at least one heat transfer fluid are passed through a first heat exchange element (126) to exchange heat between the anode off-gas and the heat transfer fluid. The cathode off-gas exiting the at least one fuel cell stack is then combined with the anode off-gas from the heat exchange element (126) in a burner and burned.

According to one aspect, the process and apparatus utilize heat exchangers that thermally integrate the reaction steps such that heat generated by exothermic reactions, e.g., combustion, are arranged closely to the heat sinks, e.g., cool methane, water and air, to minimize heat loss and maximize heat recovery. An improved outlet guide vane system is disclosed for axial flow fans. Construction details are described which reduce losses in the end wall regions of the vanes, particularly for axial flow fans operating at low flow coefficient with strong localized swirl associated with upstream rotor tip clearance flows. In the preferred embodiment, the vane spanwise airfoil stacking line is approximately straight, while leaning circumferentially toward the incoming swirl flow over the majority of the radial span. The stacking line then curves abruptly in the opposite direction over the radially outboard spanwise portion, so as to lean away from the incoming swirl at the vane tip station. The radially outboard portion of the vanes simultaneously include a gradual increase in vane stagger angle, vane camber angle and vane chord. The vane may also include an axial sweep component.

A dual-motor electric vehicle (EV) drive system is provided that employs two different types of electric motors; at least one permanent magnet synchronous motor and at least one induction asynchronous motor. Under most low demand driving applications the EV relies on the permanent magnet motor(s), thus benefiting from the operating efficiency of this type of motor. Under high demand driving applications, for example during strong acceleration and high speed cruising, the EV is able to benefit from the output power capabilities of the induction motor(s).
