An electrochromic variable reflectance mirror for a vehicle includes a reflector / electrode on the third surface of the mirror. This reflector / electrode forms an integral electrode in contact with the electrochromic media, and may be a single layer of a highly reflective material or may comprise a series of coatings. When a series of coatings is used for the reflector / electrode, there should be a base coating which bonds to the glass surface and resists any adverse interaction, e.g., corrosive action, with the constituents comprising the electrochromic media, an optional intermediate layer (or layers) which bonds well to the base coating and resists any adverse interaction with the electrochromic media, and at least one highly reflective layer which directly contacts the electrochromic media and which is chosen primarily for its high reflectance, stable behavior as an electrode, resistance to adverse interaction with the materials of the electrochromic media, resistance to atmospheric corrosion, resistance to electrical contact corrosion, the ability to adhere to the base or intermediate layer(s) (if present) and to the epoxy seal, and ease of cleaning. If a base layer is deposited it preferably covers the entire third surface; however, when this is done the highly reflective layer may optionally only coat the central portion of the third surface and not the perimeter edge portion. The third surface reflector / electrode provides of improved electrical interconnection techniques used to impart a voltage drive potential to a transparent conductor on the mirror's second surface.

The present invention relates to the field of hand-held devices that are equipped wit a processor and a digital camera for capturing motion video or still images. Images captured by the camera are used to determine motion of the hand-held device. A resulting motion signal is used as input to a user interface. Displayed images can be scrolled, zoomed or rotated by moving the hand-held device. The motion signal can also be used as input for graphical user interface to move a cursor or other object of the graphical user interface over the display. The invention relates further to a hand-held device provided with means for sensing motion, a display, a keypad with at least a first- and a second key, and a graphical user interface with objects and a cursor. The hand-held device also includes means for transforming the sensed motion of the handheld device into a signal suitable for moving the cursor over the display.

Sensor fault diagnostics and prognostics using component model and time scale orthogonal expansions

A method of diagnosing sensor faults for a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system includes the steps of creating a component model for a specific component within the system. The component model is created through the use of commonly available manufacturing data. Data within the system is input into the component model and compared to calculated and predicted values that are also calculated using the identical component models. Differences between the calculated and actual values is determined and compared to a threshold difference value. If the difference exceeds the threshold value, then a fault is detected. The specific type of sensor fault is determined using probability distribution analysis. Each type of sensor fault produces a different type of statistical deviation from normal distribution. By recognizing these patterns of deviations from the normal distribution, the specific type of fault such as electrical, intermittent or freezing of the sensor can be determined to provide initial information as to the severity and type of remedial action required.

Elevator system using a supercapacitor as a backup power source

An elevator system uses a supercapacitor to store electric energy. Furthermore, the supercapacitor can be used as a source of reserve power in emergency situations, such as power failures. The supercapacitor is connected together with three switching branches to a rectified signal of the power supply of the motor. By closing and opening the switches, the supercapacitor can be charged when the motor load is small. When the motor load is large or when the power supply fails, the electric energy contained in the supercapacitor can be discharged for use by the motor. In an emergency, the motor drives the elevator at a speed lower than normal, and therefore a supply voltage lower than normal is sufficient. Also, energy obtained from braking of the elevator can be stored in the supercapacitor, which has a storage capacity of considerable magnitude as compared to an ordinary capacitor. By applying the invention, the energy consumption of the elevator can be reduced because the waste energy obtained from the power supply can be stored and utilized when more energy is needed.
