The invention discloses a preparing method for a styrene-free low-volatile-matter unsaturated polyester resin. The preparing method is characterized by comprising the following steps: (1) adding dihydroxy alcohol, saturated and unsaturated diacid/dianhydride, dicyclopentadiene and a polymerization inhibitor according to a proportion; (2) introducing an inert gas nitrogen or carbon dioxide to remove air from a reactor; (3) starting stirring, raising the temperature to 80-90 DEG C, keeping a reaction for 1 hour, then slowly raising the temperature by controlling the temperature raising rate to be 10 DEG C per 10 minutes until the temperature reaches 160 DEG C, carrying out prepolymerization for 1 hour, controlling the temperature at a reflux condensed water knockout drum outlet to be 102 DEG C or lower, then raising the temperature to 200 DEG C, carrying out polycondensation and water knockout for 5-7 hours, raising the temperature to 210 DEG C when the resin acid value is reduced to 50 mgKOH/g, and continuing to react for 1 hour; (4) when the acid value is detected to be lower than 40 mgKOH/g, reducing the temperature to 100 DEG C, adding acrylate monomers for dilution, mixing uniformly, cooling, and then discharging. The styrene-free low-volatile-matter unsaturated polyester resin disclosed by the invention can be widely applied to prepare unsaturated polyester coating, and is free of styrene, so that the harm caused by styrene is overcome fundamentally.
