It is in the genus Asclepias, the milkweeds. This species is native to southern Canada and of much of the conterminous eastern U.S., east of the Rocky Mountains, excluding the drier parts of the prairies. It grows in sandy soils and other kinds of soils in sunny areas. It was one of the earliest North American species described in Jacques-Philippe Cornut's 1635 work Canadensium Plantarum Historia. The specific name was reused by Linnaeus due to Cornut's confusion with a species from Asia Minor.

Field tests prove that the bactericide can effectively prevent and control downy mildew and blossom-end rot of cucumbers and tomatoes; the effects of fruit retention, fruit swelling and plant swelling are achieved; the used raw materials are non-toxic, have no harm to the plants and are safe to people and livestock; no waste water is discharged in the production; and the ecological environment is protected. Besides, the price of the plant bactericide is far lower than that of a biological pesticide, and is similar to or lower than that of a common pesticide.
