The invention discloses a phenylboronic acid based hydrogel and a preparation method thereof. The hydrogel is obtained by free radical copolymerization of a vinylated functional phenylboronic acid based vinyl monomer and a vinyl monomer. Proportions of raw materials are as follows, in parts by mass: 45-100 parts of water; 0.2-2 parts of a functional monomer; 10-50 parts of a main monomer; 0-0.5 part of a crosslinking agent; and 0.01-0.1 part of an initiator. A free radical copolymerization is initiated by heating: the heating temperature is 45-80 DEG C, and the heating time is 4-48h. According to the invention, the phenylboronic acid based hydrogel is prepared by the free radical copolymerization method, the method is simple, and through changing a hydrogel preparation component content, the method can adjust and control hydrogel performance; the obtained hydrogel has excellent mechanical properties under a relatively low solid content, and has the characteristics of being highly stretchable, having good resilience, having good fatigue resistance and the like; and the obtained hydrogel has stimuli-responsiveness to a glucose concentration and pH.
