One embodiment of a blood urea nitrogen (BUN) sensor measures urea nitrogen in a biological sample by measuring a differential voltage signal based on first and second voltage signals, each representing the amount of carbon dioxide detected. The first signal represents the amount of detected carbon dioxide resulting from an enzymatic reaction in the biological sample where a urease enzyme comes into contact with the immobilized sensor surface. The second voltage signal represents the amount of background carbon dioxide detected in the biological sample. The differential voltage signal indicates the amount of urea nitrogen in the biological sample, which can be determined by appropriate correlation. Other embodiments of the BUN sensor and methods for detecting BUN are also provided, as in other embodiments.
